Exploring Life & Business with Courtney Cummings of The Stylish Organizer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Cummings

Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Of course! I was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, and found my way back home after finishing graduate school in upstate New York. Armed with my degrees and a loving husband, I served in the non-profit sector as a program director, fundraiser, event planner, and communications director for 16 years while also moonlighting as a classical singer. A new career path begin to emerge during the beginning of the pandemic, and I made the transition to professional organizing after discovering the joy and serenity that I could bring to others through organizing their homes. I am extremely grateful to my close friends and family who encouraged me to dream big and “take the risk” when I started The Stylish Organizer.

As a busy working mom and wife, I understand the need for efficiency in a household and business environment. With this in mind, I strive to create beautiful and sustainable systems that work for each client’s lifestyle, while matching their aesthetic and functional goals for the space. I take great pride leaving behind a transformed space to be enjoyed and used by everyone.

When I am not transforming spaces, you can find me enjoying an Americano at the local coffee shop, while humming some of my favorite tunes.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running your own business is certainly not for the faint of heart! Coming from a non-profit background, I had some things to learn, but I am grateful for the guidance and support of other small business owners in my town. (Also, I am thankful to Google!) The network of fellow small business owners in this town have been instrumental in the success of this business and I hope to pass this support on to others who are starting their own entrepreneurial journey.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Stylish Organizer is a professional organizing company serving the Dayton, Ohio region. We cater to clients who are looking to establish or upgrade organizational systems in their homes and businesses to reduce stress and streamline their workflow. All spaces go through our process of minimizing, sorting, categorizing, styling, and labeling.  Our home services specialize in kitchens, pantries, closets, bathrooms, playrooms, garages, basements, and storage areas. We also offer home transition services to make your house market-ready prior to a move and unpack your items as you move to your new home. Our business services include creating space plans and systems that help with inventory organization, store organization and layout, and product placement. We also offer hourly consultation rates for those who are looking for a little help getting started, but who are interested in tackling the project themselves.  This service may include space plan ideas, product recommendations, and placement suggestions.

Whether working on my own home or helping friends and neighbors discover the same calm and beauty in theirs, I craft every detail with an eye for design and function. We are also known for our creative use of products and the ability to see the potential of each and every space.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
If you think about, we all take small risks with decisions we make every day. What clothes should wear? Will I have enough gas in the tank to make it to the store or should I get some now? Is that takeout food in the fridge still good? Calculated risks with the potential for small consequences may keep us in our comfort zone (or not if that takeout food has gone bad!), but if we don’t break out of those comfortable places and take a giant leap every now and then, we can miss out on some amazing moments in life. I am so glad I took the risk of starting my own business after 16 years in the non-profit world. The opportunities I have had to meet new people, connect, grow, and create have been life-changing. I think we all need to listen to that small voice in our head that says to give it a try.
