Exploring Life & Business with Barbara Burgie of Burgie MediaFusion

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Burgie.

Barbara Burgie

Hi Barbara, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I graduated from Penn State University in 1998. After studying abroad and having several internships, I realized I wanted to find a career where I could complement my passion for people with my desire to improve my community. My first job was with Wittenberg University as an admissions representative. I loved meeting with students and families, learning their stories and their passions, and helping them see if they felt at home in our community.

I took those skills into my first agency job and realized that learning a client’s story and connecting that story with people was not resonating as we entered the digital age of marketing. In 2004, I decided to start a business where I could do things differently. I wanted to take an honest and authentic approach to online marketing by working with clients who hoped to find their ideal clients differently.

I also knew what mistakes were happening and how critical creating a culture of taking risks was to succeed. Marketing was changing fast, and what had been working for years was no longer successful. Agencies and their clients must agree to change and commit to trying new things together. The relationship was the key, so I wanted partners whose core beliefs were the same as mine.

Fast-forward to today; we love what we do and who we work with. We have developed a process integrating research, planning, review, and adaptation into every digital or traditional marketing element. To succeed, we must always focus on people, what they need, and how we can help. I feel so lucky to be able to take my passion for people and use this passion to improve each company that we are fortunate enough to call our partner.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The most considerable struggle is not listening to my inner voice or team. Every time we struggle, I realize that somewhere along the road, someone has provided insights that would have helped us not hit the proverbial pothole. However, like any business owner will tell you, the mistakes and the struggles are things that teach you more than the successes.

A core value of our company is embracing change and taking risks. Understanding that means we will struggle, and that struggle will provide us the opportunity to learn and do it differently the next time. This growth cycle makes us the best at what we do, so we embrace our struggles in order to learn.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In 2004, I started Burgie MediaFusion, a marketing and communications firm that works with clients to help them navigate current technology and marketing trends and find the correct tactics to spread their story.

We are different in that we believe in critical truths in marketing.

Positivity:

If you work with us, you work with a team that likes to have fun while getting work done. We don’t work with those who complain, as there is always something that can be done! To the BMF team, the most essential part of work is realizing that we’re all in this together. We are here to help each other succeed.

Research and Review:

Things are changing so quickly. What worked three weeks ago may not work today, so we like to look at the research behind what’s happening. That means we set goals and evaluate each strategy. We review the data to ensure that the dollars and, more importantly, the time spent is worth the effort. From reporting to trend watching, part of our partnership means keeping you informed and aware of what is happening while ensuring that you’re informing us of its impact on your bottom line. We are on this journey together.

Flexibility:

Remember back in the day when we would make a marketing plan for an entire year? Ha! That’s not the case anymore. So, when we partner, we hope you understand that we might give you a buzz and change things quickly. If something goes viral, we have to maximize it while we can! (Think yoga… deep breaths and flexibility to move where we need to go.)

Honesty:

We have been doing this for a long time, and honesty is critical to success. We don’t work with your competitors, and we don’t share your information. We will tell you if what you are doing is not a good investment and push you to think differently. We also hope you challenge us in the same way.

What do you think about happiness?
Happiness is people, my faith, family, and friends. I love how we can collaborate to share and support, which brings me joy.
