Exploring Life & Business with Antoinette Barkley of A&M INDEPENDENT LIVING

Today we’d like to introduce you to Antoinette Barkley.

Hi Antoinette, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Antoinette Barkley, and I am a serial entrepreneur, community leader, and woman of resilience. My journey hasn’t been easy, but every challenge has shaped me into the person I am today.
I became a mother of four children by the age of 25 and learned early what it meant to work hard, sacrifice, and never give up. Throughout my life, I’ve faced setbacks, personal losses, and obstacles that could have broken me. Instead, they fueled my determination to build a better future for myself, my family, and my community.
Today, I own multiple businesses, including a senior care agency, a catering company, and an independent living program designed to help people rebuild their lives with dignity and stability. I’m also passionate about mentoring entrepreneurs, creating opportunities for others, and using technology and innovation to help people generate additional income.
Beyond business, I founded the Foxy Queens Social Club to bring women together through sisterhood, networking, community service, and meaningful connections. Everything I do is rooted in my belief that success means lifting others as you climb.
My story is proof that your past does not define your future. With faith, perseverance, and a willingness to keep learning, it’s possible to turn pain into purpose. My mission is to inspire others to dream bigger, take action, and create a legacy that impacts generations to come.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. Like many entrepreneurs, I’ve faced financial challenges, personal setbacks, and moments where I questioned whether I should keep going. I became a mother of four at a young age, so balancing motherhood while building businesses required countless sacrifices, long hours, and unwavering determination.
One of the greatest challenges I’ve experienced was losing several close family members, including both of my parents and my grandparents. Those losses changed my life, but instead of allowing grief to stop me, I used it as motivation to create something meaningful and to help others.
Building businesses from the ground up has also come with obstacles such as limited resources, learning through trial and error, and proving myself in competitive industries. I’ve learned that success doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistency, resilience, and the willingness to keep moving forward even when things don’t go as planned.
Every challenge has made me stronger and reinforced my purpose. Today, I use my experiences to encourage others, create opportunities in my community, and show people that your circumstances don’t have to determine your future. My journey has taught me that setbacks are often the foundation for your greatest comeback.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
A&M Independent Living was created with one mission: to provide safe, affordable, and supportive housing for adults who are ready to move forward in life. We serve individuals who are independent but need a stable environment to regain their footing, including those transitioning from incarceration, treatment programs, hospital stays, or other life-changing situations.
What makes A&M Independent Living different is that we don’t just provide a room—we provide hope, stability, and an opportunity for a fresh start. We believe everyone deserves a second chance and a place where they are treated with dignity and respect.
As someone who has overcome personal challenges and built businesses from the ground up, I understand the importance of having support during difficult seasons. That experience inspired me to create a program that focuses on empowerment, accountability, and helping residents become self-sufficient.
We offer clean, comfortable housing in a positive environment where residents can focus on rebuilding their lives. My vision is to expand A&M Independent Living into a trusted resource that changes lives, strengthens families, and creates lasting impact throughout the community.
More than a business, A&M Independent Living is a purpose-driven organization committed to giving people the opportunity to write a new chapter in their lives. I want our brand to be known for compassion, integrity, second chances, and making a real difference—one person at a time.
