Exploring Life & Business with Ambe Sennon & Dexter Monk Jr. of DMV Hotshots

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ambe Sennon and Dexter Monk Jr. Them and their team share their story with us below:

DMV Hotshots is a trucking and logistics company specializing in hauling general freight throughout the United States and Canada. The company was founded in 2021 by two Howard University finance graduates, Ambe and Dexter, who have been running businesses together since 2014. Starting with hosting events to selling Chick-fil-a sandwiches in our college dorms, we always hustled our way to strive for more. Once Ambe graduated, he found a finance manager position at a general contractor in Washington D.C. His 2-year tenure gave him enough confidence to start his own business as he became more familiar with the blue-collar industry. Dexter found himself taking the traditional finance approach, starting a career in investment banking. After consulting with his truck-driving grandfather over the overwhelming nature of investment banking, he realized that the answer was right in front of him. Transportation and logistics were the answer, especially with the industry knowledge, experience, and support of his grandfather.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has been everything but smooth, literally. We have been on the road since January 2022 and we already have the wildest stories. One, in particular, was our first breakdown in Alabama during the end of the winter of 2022. We needed a new axle for our trailer because we weren’t properly oiling our hubs. We had to travel two hours to the trailer dealership to purchase a new axle and then travel back to a janky mechanic who upcharged us because he knew how desperate we were. This experience made us realize how new to this industry we really are and how to properly handle situations that aren’t in our favor.

We’ve been impressed with DMV Hotshots, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
DMV Hotshots employs CDL Class A drivers with technical knowledge and industry experience. Utilizing top-of-the-line equipment for both long and short-haul routes. As of right now, our current setup includes a dually pickup truck with a 40-foot gooseneck trailer. We specialize in long hauls across the country for general freight scaling up to 16,000 pounds or less. We have carried so many different types of cargo including military and secret service vehicles, farm tractors, ski resort equipment, plumbing and HVAC equipment, trees, and much more. DMV Hotshots stand well on their motto of “We Haul It All!” because as long as it can fit on our trailer, we will safely take it where it needs to be. We plan to raise enough funding this year to purchase some new equipment so we can haul bigger freight. We are excited to see where the future takes us!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
COVID-19 taught us that freight does not stop. In the midst of a national pandemic, life still moves on day by day and people are still ordering everything from the internet. The ventilators, masks, and additional hospital equipment had to be delivered to these hospitals and freight carriers are the ones responsible to get this done. Truck drivers are essential workers just like policemen, nurses, firefighters, etc.
