Today we’d like to introduce you to Vladislav Volkov.
Hi Vladislav, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
My name is Vladislav and I am a Cleveland videographer. My story goes back to childhood in Russia when I was playing with my grandfather’s old film camera. Back then, I couldn’t even imagine how much depth is in this “toy”, how much I got to learn about it. Interest in cameras and filming accompanied me all the time, and finally, I got the opportunity to apply it: I started shooting my first projects at school. I shot completely different videos for the school, from interviews to commercials. You could say it was my first job, even if I wasn’t getting paid for this. After graduating from school, I didn’t betray my hobby and continued to shoot, while improving my skills and increasing my knowledge in filmmaking.
A few years later, I got my first paid projects: videos for Hyundai Dealerships, commercial shoots for some local businesses. I didn’t even imagine that I would decide to build a career out of this.
After some time, I moved to the USA, where I decided to turn my passion from a hobby into a job. I started taking projects to make videos for local businesses, big Cleveland manufactures, and some commercial product videos. I’m constantly increasing my knowledge by taking different filmmaking courses and continuously practicing my knowledge.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any road that implies some kind of development is not easy. Progress is always closely connected with mistakes, regressions, and falls. It hasn’t left me unaffected. It happened that at a certain point in my life, I moved to different country, to the USA. Do you know when astronauts learn to walk on Earth again after a long stay in zero gravity? Exactly the same feeling came to me after the move – I had to learn to “walk” again, I had to learn to live again. My hobby and main passion in life had to undergo a lot of changes. Now I had to speak, read, write, FILM in another language. Sometime after the move, I decided to enter the world of video production here in another country.
I started getting my first orders with varying success, and soon people started finding me through the recommendations of my previous clients.
I still continue getting better in video production, filling my knowledge with new information and new skills.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a videographer; I transform clients’ meanings and ideas in beautiful and informative videos. I specialize in creating different kinds of videos: commercials, product or event videos, interviews. What I’m most proud of is that the work I do is appreciated by people and helps them in their own business. Creating a video requires not only making cool shots, but also work on the script, shot-list, searching for references, creating a storyboard, and editing. Among other “people with a camera” I am a videographer not only at work but also in life. I look at the world from the point of view of the camera, every moment that my eyes capture, I feel compositionally. I see how the light falls and imagine how I would film particular scene, even if I don’t have a camera at the moment.
This lifestyle imposes certain restrictions on the perception of this world, at the same time being a good training for myself, allowing me to train my filmmaking skills day after day.
What are your plans for the future?
Any road that is connected with development, as I’ve already mentioned, is not easy. Being engaged in video filming on my own, I meet many obstacles along the way. It happened to be that my sister is a marketing specialist here in Cleveland. She is a creative and an idea person, which contributed to our cooperation with her.
At first, I just helped her to shoot promotional videos for her clients. After a while, we decided to combine our skills and capabilities in our own marketing agency – “R Production Group” (http://rproductiongroup.com/).
My sister Regina will provide marketing and business promotion services. But marketing is impossible without a visual presentation of a company, so I will be responsible for creating visual content, video particularly. This collaboration is highly efficient and allows to provide the client with a full package of marketing services in a short period of time.
