Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Biddle. Them and their team share their story with us below:
We are Sweet Mae’s Cookie Company, a black-woman owned cookie company. Sweet Mae’s is a premium stuffed cookie company with a southern accent. What is unique about our cookies is they are all made with brown butter and stuffed. Our cookies are thick and filled with delicious fillings such as Nutella, Cookie Butter, Cream Cheese, and more. Our flavors come from desserts you see in the south like Carrot Cake and Red Velvet or things our founder, Tiffany, grew up eating in her childhood. Sweet Mae’s was started from our founder’s passion of baking and a way to express that passion through each cookie she bakes!
Tiffany comes from a southern family who loves to bake and cook. It all started with Mama Clara and Fannie Mae. Mama Clara could make biscuits by hand that no one could recreate, not using a single measuring utensil. Fannie Mae is Mama Clara’s daughter-in-law. The two of them cooked and baked for many people including family and friends. Fannie Mae is the mother of the founder’s grandmother, Linda, and who the company is named after. Tiffany’s grandmother also loves to cook and bake, and Tiffany grew up in the kitchen baking with her grandmother. As they say, food brings people together and we genuinely believe that! Baking is a hobby that has been taken on for generations in Tiffany’s family. Tiffany can remember being in the kitchen with her grandmother and mother making different goodies. It was something that she clung to and became a natural at. Ultimately, her goal for our company is to be an extension of her family’s legacy, make the best cookies, put smiles on people’s faces and make people’s bellies happy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For the most part, it has been a smooth road. Our business really took off during the pandemic due to people starting to order more online. We started our business from our home and grew to transition our business to a commercial kitchen, Findlay Kitchen in Findlay Market.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My name is Tiffany Biddle and I am the CEO and Founder of Sweet Mae’s. I started my baking journey years ago with my grandma. I grew up in the kitchen watching my grandmother cook and bake. I currently run Sweet Mae’s full time. Before I was running Sweet Mae’s, I was working doing Program Management. Before that, I was a Systems Engineer. I received my BSE in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. I went on to get my Master’s in Electrical Engineering with a concentration in Systems from Tuskegee University.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I am an only child and grandchild. Haha! Life growing up was pretty cool considering it was just me. I did want siblings but hey that never happened. I was quiet if I did not know you but very talkative with my friends and the people that I knew. I’ve always been independent and a go-getter. I played basketball growing up. I was actually pretty good to the point I had college offers. I decided I did not want to go to college and play basketball but I was always into math and science which lead me to go to school for engineering. My grandfather owned an engineering firm which also was a big reason I pursued engineering. My mom now runs the family’s business. I was also always into food. I love every aspect about food and now I co-own and operate a food and travel blog called Pursuit of Delights. I knew I always wanted a food product line. Helping run Pursuit of Delights helped give me my introduction to the food world. It also was an awesome platform to have when launching Sweet Mae’s.
