Today we’d like to introduce you to Starling.
Hi Starling, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Starling consists of Beck Watson, Mason Lurie, and River Owens.
Beck and Mason have known each other all their lives. After moving to OSU campus, River posted on yikyak (an anonymous social message board) about looking for people play music with.
After going to shows together, we became closer and decided to make our own music, practicing inside a studio apartment before getting relocated to the Baker West Dorm Basement.
After playing our first show inside a Donato’s pizza basement (with the help of some of our best friends), it broadened our horizons to playing all over Columbus.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The main struggles come from pressure from ourselves and our ability to work together as a cohesive unit in a musical context. On top of that, learning to navigate ourselves in the music scene of Columbus has been a great learning experience.
Additionally balancing practice with school schedules becomes really hard because we’re all full-time students.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Since there are not many local bands within the same genre as us, we’re attempting to carve out our own niche of emo/punk music.
On top of that, there’s only three of us, which is less than most bands we play with, so it requires us to be in sync with each other more often than not.
Additionally, this past semester we played 9 shows!
We of course, couldn’t do it without our friends in clubs/bands across campus inviting us to play with them.
Shoutout AROUSE radio club, Musicians Collective, Tobias, Hog House, and all of our besties in bands who have helped support us. We love what we get to do and those who come to our shows 😀
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising (to some) we do is screen print all of our own merch in our apartment/dorm basement. We have friends who help us get the gear together, and then we all hand-make our merch.
