Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Burgett.
Hi Sarah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
My name is Sarah Burgett, and my story is a bit unconventional. I was an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember, starting with lemonade stands and duct tape wallets to being one of the first beauty YouTubers/Influencers on the platform. I knew creating content, marketing, and even analytical work when it comes to tech was second nature to me. Everyone always asked if I liked being in front of the camera or behind the camera more, and I could never choose. As fun as it was traveling, having a manager in LA, and then going on to work as an independent contractor for many companies, I wanted to expand my knowledge and take a more traditional route with college. I ended up graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a major in Communications, specializing in Public Relations, as well as a minor in Electronic Media from CCM-audio production, video production, and photo. Covid-19 happened shortly after that, and jobs were not easy to find. I jumped around to random positions that would hire me at an entry-level position to see what was out there and finally found a job that fit me perfectly. I was the marketing manager for the hospitality group Four Entertainment Group, that runs 22+ bars between Cincinnati, Columbus, and Chicago. After learning what it took to be a corporate marketing wizard, I decided that I would help a few small companies with consulting about social media during my free time. I started being an independent contractor for REST (iresteasy, LLC) once a week and fell in love with my entrepreneurial side all over again. Working with a startup from the ground up encouraged me to jump out of bed every day and I absolutely loved the idea of wearing as many hats as possible to see the company flourish. I was offered the position of Chief Marketing Officer and made the difficult decision of leaving my work family at 4EG behind to take a risk with the new hospitality company, REST.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have endured many struggles and road bumps throughout my career, as I’m sure most people have. The choices I have made have not always been good ones (aka-moving to LA without savings and not putting as much work in/taking a summer off of content creating- debt, bleh). However, I do not have any regrets as each roadblock I have reached has made me a stronger human as I will never accept failure. I believe as long as you keep learning, making mistakes, and growing from them, you will never fail.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I guess I have taken the career approach for the entirety of this interview, but I will reiterate the things I have said in a professional manner. It was hard to pick from the above options as I would consider myself right in the middle of being a professional and a creative. I am also currently an equity partner in REST, and that I am very proud of. I specialize in website design, social media content creation, SEO, analytics, design, listing administration, sales, and above all-people. I believe with everyone you meet; you can learn more about yourself or others. I love meeting different kinds of humans and building relationships that are meant to be nurtured and last. I believe with my ability to be ‘in front & behind” a camera this sets me apart from others.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you.
Luck is a very interesting concept. I was recently in a Cincinnati Business Courier breakfast networking event where one of the panelists quoted, “Luck Favors the Prepared Mind.” I agree with this statement wholeheartedly. I truly believe that the reason I have accomplished some of the things I have at such a young age is solely because I believed I could and I saw myself in that position and then took the necessary steps to get there, no matter the roadblock. I do not see myself as any more capable than the person next to me; I just didn’t stop until I got there. The contrary can also be true as if you don’t think you can do something, you are one step closer to never achieving it, ever.
