Today we’d like to introduce you to Salomé Tregre.
Hi Salomé, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m a Cincinnati native born and raised. A Professional Ballet Dancer in the Corps de Ballet with Cincinnati Ballet. I started at their school when I was 3 years old. In 2017 I became Cincinnati Ballet’s first African American Clara in their previous 50 year history of The Nutcracker. The summer before my mother suffered from an intense stroke and I almost gave up ballet. I came up through CB’s academy all the way to their main company. I attended school regularly until my senior year of high school in 2022 where I opted for the online option to be able to dance full time. I’m currently going into my 3rd season
in the Main Company as historically one of very few African American Female Ballet Dancers in Cincinnati.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No absolutely not. No dancer’s career is and no human’s life is a smooth road either. Ive struggled with family emergencies including my mother’s stroke when I was just getting into the start of my career. There are identity struggles especially with being an African American dancer in general. This art form was never made for us. There is inherent and underlying racism. A struggle to find community as a minority. Ballet is hard as it is. the level of focus and discipline is top tier. Of course it is all worth it in the end but the work and sacrifice is never easy and it will never become easy.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I dance professionally with Cincinnati Ballet. I specialize in multiple art forms including ballet, contemporary, modern, and jazz. I’m proud of overcoming life’s challenges so far as a 21 year old. I’m proud of the work I do leading up to performances for the city of Cincinnati.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Spotify and Apple Music are my home bases. Music is such an important pillar of my work and creativity. Marquee TV is also such a wonderful resource to watch full length ballets and excerpts from other companies as well as YouTube.
