Today we’d like to introduce you to Miranda Scott.
Hi Miranda, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started working in retail at 16 years old, and I never looked back. My parents were entrepreneurs in their own right, and so retail came naturally to me. I dabbled in other career fields like real estate, for example, but I always knew I wanted to develop my own brand/space one day. That’s grown, evolved, and changed as I have developed as a person. My favorite part about retail was the connections I would form over long periods of time; I wanted my space to have community and gathering at the heart of it all. I feel that being in community is healing. I opened Coven in 2018 with connection, healing, and uncovering a true sense of self as the primary mission.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Definitely not, but well worth it. Sharing a community space is both public and personal. It requires me to look within frequently and constantly refine what my intentions are. I have a responsibility to be transparent and be in integrity. But I am also human and not perfect; it’s bringing warmth and joy to others while balancing your own personal life and boundaries. Doing this has required taking risks and making mistakes. This is tough as a perfectionist. Navigating a small business through the pandemic has also been so hard, so eye-opening, but highly educational. Nothing has been smooth, but I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m so proud of this space that I have collectively built with so many others,
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
First and foremost, I’m a creator. Retail has been all I’ve ever known, and it’s how I’ve always supported myself after moving out when I was seventeen years old. But long before that, I’ve always been an artist and can finally call myself that after many years of healing and recovery. I love designing beautiful spaces that make people feel peaceful and centered. I love bringing together color, patterns, nature elements, sounds, and smells in an intentional way. I am an abstract painter. I am a mother. I am a certified yoga teacher who specializes in breath work and meditation as a means to regulate the nervous system. Along with running my brick-and-mortar shop and online community, I offer private sessions with clients that incorporate energy work, crystal healing, breathwork, meditation, art, and sound. I also offer Tarot readings, where I specialize in reading into a client’s energy centers, relaying their body wisdom back to them to offer clarity and stability. I facilitate gatherings, rituals, and occasionally retreats, which I’m hoping to expand on more!
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I think it’s pretty obvious since the pandemic that retail/brick and mortar will rapidly shift into mostly a tech space. I mean, we have always known that; I think the pandemic just sped it up, and it’s amazing how fast some of us pivot and adapt to the changes. Just 5 years ago, I never knew I would do dances on the internet and consider it my new normal lol. I think it’s always beneficial to revisit what our intentions are and how we can still honor our needs. This fast-paced world will just have you dancing online, no questions asked, before you know it lol.
