Daily Inspiration: Meet Maureen Walsh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maureen Walsh.

Hi Maureen, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers.
I’m an international visionary artist specializing in large-scale public murals, mixed media installations, and textiles made with natural dyes. I currently reside on the North Shore of Oahu, but I grew up in Lakewood, Ohio, and attended Magnificat High School.

I graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2005 with a BFA in fibers. After graduation, I moved directly to New York City and worked many different jobs, including several retail positions, babysitting, artist assistant, and custom sewing for private clients. In 2007 I started a business with a friend in Brooklyn. We created large-scale installations for events, commercial and residential spaces. We also had a line of digitally printed floor mats. We had an amazing studio and even turned the next-door parking lot into a community garden.

I left NYC in 2013 after my father passed away and went on a quest to find a deeper meaning of life and to heal my heart.

I traveled around the world and studied with many master artists and healers. In 2018, I spent the year as the resident artist an ashram in India. I created three large-scale murals that enhanced the beauty of the space and helped the yoga students drop deeper into their practices and meditations. I was always an artist, but before my time in India, I had never painted a mural or really spent much time painting at all. I spent a lot of time in meditation, and the teacher at the ashram asked me to paint. It was really amazing to open up that channel as it’s what I do professionally now.

Over the last four years s I’ve created ten large-scale murals as well as a mixed media installation for Cleveland State University through the Ohio Percent for the Arts Program.

All of my travels and cultural experiences are infused into my work. I’m a certified yoga, and meditation teacher as well as a cranio sacral therapist and I use these modalities to infuse her work with creativity, healing, and love.

I’m inspired by the magic and intricacy of nature, plant medicine, intuition, sacred geometry, meditation, and the healing power of the ocean. I’ve witnessed (firsthand) the powerful the connection between healing and art, and I love to share it with the world.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There were many struggles along the way, but I always came back to the dreams that I wanted to create and kept holding that vision which always kept the engine running!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an international visionary artist specializing in large-scale public murals, mixed media installations, and textiles made with natural dyes. I’m also a visionary cranio sacral therapist and meditation teacher, and I find it amazing to see the parallel between art and healing. I bring the healing into my art, and I bring my vision and creativity into my healing and meditation work.

I’m most known for the murals I paint- I have two in Lakewood 🙂

I’m most proud of the lifestyle that I’ve created over the years. It’s not exactly conventional compared to most, but it’s extremely satisfying for me. I’ve traveled all over the world and have gotten so much inspiration from different cultures, landscapes, and people.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I do consider myself a risk taker. I am a strong believer in following your intuition, which can definitely lead to taking risks- and they can especially be risks that may not make sense to anyone else.

I have taken many risks over the years, but the biggest risk was moving to India to study and create for a year. I was gone from the United States for a period of two years doing deep personal healing work which felt like a risk for my career, but in the end, it was so deeply valuable for every aspect of my life.
