Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Gisbrecht
Hi Matt, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I fell in love with playing instruments at a young age and it carried with me all the way into high school when I began playing the acoustic guitar. I began as a self taught musician, and in an attempt to save myself money I started learning every part of music making, production, and film so that I wouldn’t have to hire someone else to do it because I was always broke working at places like Walmart, Target, Home Depot etc. I began doing small tours, performing at coffee shops, and mixing music for local Ohio artists. I recorded my first rap song with some local guys who I would sound engineer for and it got me on local Ohio radio stations at the time starting with WZIP 88.1fm in Akron, Ohio. This all started my full time music career that began in about 2012 and got me here to where I am today.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My life and music career has been anything but a smooth road. Every step forward would cause two steps back and it led me to struggle every step of the way but I truly believe that discipline trumps all and the only way to win is to never quit. At the beginning of my journey, every huge opportunity would get squandered. I had my back in the corner with no money so many times I can’t even count. I just always had to trust the process and trust that my mind would work for me and it always got me out. Some of my biggest struggles were the death of both of my parents, dealing with the collapse of my family, having my music and art stolen by other very notable individuals, and having all of my biggest business deals fall out of my hands due to the wrongdoing of other people I worked with.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make music and also specialize in film and marketing for all kinds of businesses. I am probably most known for my many musical collaborations with people like O.T. Genesis, Jonny Craig, Futuristic, etc. and publicized songs with the WWE that were promoted by Paul Heyman. I became known for having a public discrepancy with Drake over stealing some of my songs, doing a tribute song for a famous YouTuber named “The Angry Grandpa” with his son Michael Green, and then most recently for starting to teach my son how to film using my cinema cameras. I am most proud of my kids and how I am able to pass any knowledge I have to them and enrich their lives. I think what sets me apart from others is just my work ethic and ability to write music and create things very quickly. I write at least one new song every day and spend my life mastering the art of being more efficient to maximize my time.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Covid absolutely ruined live music and touring for a while, so when this happened I had to shift a lot of focus in the music industry in general and learn how to monetize online more so than offline. It really changed the way I utilized social media as a means of a business instead of a personal highlight reel.
