Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Kaitlyn (MK) Hensley.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
i’ve always loved art and have done it for as long as i can remember, but what really got me motivated to get better was when i was young, after school, my friend at the time and i had an art “competition”, she had called my art trash and me being the stubborn kid i was put my head down and started creating more seriously.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
up until my senior year of high school i was a primarily self taught artist. there have been and still are a lot of times where i feel my art can’t compare to my peers. i have to remind myself that everyone expresses themselves differently and have unique creative journeys.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I focus my creative work in printmaking and drawing though I like to work with whatever material I can get my hands on. I enjoy playing with the materials I have to create the story I wish to tell.
In my practice, I am most proud of my work painting fez cases for the local court of the ladies oriental shrine of north america where half of the money I earn goes into their Franklin-Albrecht scholarship fund.
I was also honored to be able to participate in three gallery fellowships through Artworks Cincinnati
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the diversity you see in cincinnati between the people, culture, food, and art. I enjoy being able to walk or drive around the area and feel like i see something new or interesting every time.
i do however dislike Cincinnati’s housing crisis with the significant decrease in affordable housing and increase in residents
Pricing:
- commissions tend to run on cost of material as well as how long i’ve worked on the piece
- prints of previous work run between $15-20 for small scale $30 for large scale
