Daily Inspiration: Meet Marissa Losier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Losier

Hi Marissa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always wanted to have a career in art. I went to community college in Upstate New York for graphic design but wasn’t really into it. I got my first tattoo during that time and that was it, becoming a tattoo artist was my new dream. I got an apprenticeship shortly after moving to Ohio at an old school street shop. This was just before Covid hit so that was an experience in itself. My apprenticeship was cut short once shops opened back up, because tattoos were in such high demand. It was trial by fire for a while, but soon I found my stride and developed a client base, and moved on to work by appointment only at a smaller shop. Now I’ve worked with the same people for several years and have a wonderful group of return and regular clients that I would all consider family. Tattooing is a more than a job to me and I can’t imagine doing anything different

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It wasn’t a smooth road for sure. Covid was a big factor. I had just quit my day job as a veterinary assistant to work full time at the shop. My apprenticeship wasn’t paid, and if I wasn’t married with a dual income and the support of a partner I wouldn’t have been able to do it. Once everything shut down completely for quarantine I couldn’t get my job back at the vet and couldn’t continue my learning at the tattoo shop. Once everything opened up again my mentors told me to get ready to start taking walk ins, despite only learning for less than 6 months, including quarantine. It was definitely an anxiety filled ride that first year

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My favorite styles to work with are black and gray illustrative, black work, some fine line and botanical designs. I’m most known for my fine line work, though I can also do styles like American traditional and color illustration. My favorite pieces are always the ones where I have creative freedom, and am able to work with animal and plant designs. I’m told I have a light hand and good conversation skills, which is a great compliment to me. I always want my clients to have the best experience

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
If you’re really interested in tattooing, just keep drawing, and don’t get discouraged. Tattooing is a growing field and there’s a ton of amazing artists out there. It’s very competitive. A great way to network is to just get tattooed by artists you admire, and get advice from as many people as possible. Build a portfolio of a lot of different styles and mediums to show your versatility. If you get turned down for an apprenticeship, don’t get discouraged, and just keep at it
