Today we’d like to introduce you to Lee Boyle.
Hi Lee, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Third Class originated in East Palestine, Ohio, in 1999. I started writing songs with my brother Jack Boyle, and my best friend, Pepe Parish, out of a need for creativity amongst our small-town life. We took an idiosyncratic approach to music, with a two-string guitar, vocals with no gimmicks, colorful tones, and unique rhythms; this stylistic independence carried us to today. We didn’t follow much a model. We didn’t take it too seriously, but we worked hard. We’ve earned a reputation for being all about the music and, to this day, continue to innovate underground pop music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been smooth in that my bandmates are ideal. They are people who follow their hearts. We also have a touring member, Bob Young, who is becoming a great friend, too. Because I am surrounded by compassionate people with senses of humor, the process is its own reward. The difficulties lie in breaking through to a larger public. Though we possess a strong pop sensibility and like to write catchy songs, we’ve had a rough time getting the recognition we deserve. That being said, once you’re a fan, you’re all in.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We make experimental pop music about ghosts, childhood, traveling, and love. We are known for a blend of poetic and catchy art rock which leaves the listener entranced in wonder. We are most proud of our new album, Haunted Until The Very End; we consider it to be the greatest album in the entire history of music. We are set apart by our long-term independence in the underground music scene.
What were you like growing up?
I was a shy child. I drew a lot and played with puppets. My introduction to music was The Muppet Movie Soundtrack which I checked out of the library, on vinyl, constantly.
