Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Serey
Hi Kevin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I “discovered” music by going through my dad’s old records and listening to CCR, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, etc. I fell in love and would spend a lot of time spinning my parent’s records. At age 13, my parents gave me an old hand me down guitar. I practiced every single day and after a few years they upgraded me to a nicer guitar. I started playing in a local blues and rock band at age 17 and that band stayed together for 20 years, playing bars and festivals.
When the band broke up, I explored more acoustic Americana bluegrassy music. I won some songwriting awards and realized that I should take this more seriously. I became interested in sync (music in TV and films). I’ve been taking sync classes and learning production. I still love playing acoustic Americana and electric blues, but I also focus on writing songs for TV and film.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I play music for the joy of making music. I do not rely on music to pay the bills. Therefore, it is pure fun and enjoyment. If I make a little money along the way, it is just icing on the cake.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I hope I would be known as a good songwriter. I know there are a million guitar players out there that can play better than me. But I like to think I can hold my own. My main goal now is to write a great song, tell a great story and get people to tap their toes while listening.
I am most proud of having one of my songs chosen out of 7,000+ entries to partner with ‘Music Beats Cancer’. I am proud to have won some international songwriting awards and been in the top 10 against some professional heavy hitters. I am proud of the songs that start as an idea in my head and become fully fleshed out recordings.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
Not necessarily related to Covid. We all need human connection. Being shut away and stuck inside for extended periods can absolutely lead people to be depressed and feel isolated. Nothing earth-shattering – but I always feel better when I’m surrounded with friends and family that I love.
