Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Taylor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Taylor.

Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
Jess’s Sweet Treats originally started off as an idea. In January 2022, I was in the car with my best friend Olivia, and we got on the topic of bakeries since we were driving to go buy some cookies for us to eat. In the car, we were talking, and Olivia says, “Jessica, It seems fun to work in a bakery” I responded and said, “yeah, it seems like a ton of fun in the future; I might want to open my bakery” Olivia then says “If you do open one, I think you should name it Jess’s Sweet Treats.” After she told me what my company’s name would be I told her, “That sounds like a good idea,” but from then on, I did not give our conversation much thought. Until six months later when my brother Chris asked me if I would like to sell some of my cupcakes at a party he was throwing. I enthusiastically said yes! because I love baking and decorating. He then said, “Since you are going to be selling cupcakes what is your booths name?” I then did some thinking, and I then remembered the conversation I had with Olivia six months ago. I responded and said, “My booth will be called Jess’s Sweet Treats” Chris responded and said, “I really like that!” Chris’s party was very successful a lot of people came and bought cupcakes from me. I received a lot of good feedback that night. The feedback made me feel very inspired, and I decided I should try and actually start my own business.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth ride. I’m still in the early stages of understanding how to own and run a business. Some of the struggles I have faced along the way is trying to create new flavors and trying to find new customers I can sell to. It definitely can become stressful at times; however, I’m still finding success here and there, and I get to learn new lessons along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mainly specialize in cupcakes in the future; I would definitely want to expand my menu. I would really like to be able to sell custom-made cakes to future customers. What sets me apart from others is that Jess’s Sweet Treats is a one-person business I make everything by myself. I started my business this year, so at the moment, I’m not known for anything yet. However, what I am most proud of is trying to put myself out there more. I just graduated high school (class of 2022), and this fall, I start culinary school I am going to major in pastry arts.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something that most people might not know about me is that I can be very shy when I first meet you. I take a while to warm up to new people. I tend to have a very lighthearted personality I don’t like to let a lot of stuff bother me. Despite having a light-hearted personality, I do believe I can be very funny around friends and family. I like to dress up in costumes and make skits to send to my friends.
