Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Calix
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
About four years ago, I knew I wanted to build my own business, but I struggled to find something that truly ignited my passion. Growing up, I didn’t have a clear vision of what I wanted to do, unlike many kids who had a dream job in mind. Looking back now, I realize I had to explore to discover what truly resonated with me. Everything shifted nearly two years ago when I discovered crochet. I taught myself the craft, and because I’d always been into arts and crafts growing up, it came naturally to me. As someone who is neurodivergent, I’ve often found that creative outlets help me process and focus, and crochet became the perfect way to channel my energy. I started experimenting with a variety of projects, from bags to tops to blankets, and the more I created, the more I realized this was the missing piece I had been searching for. Crochet provided me with a sense of relaxation and fulfillment, not only when I finished a project but also throughout the entire creative process.
As I embrace my neurodivergence, I’ve learned that my attention to detail and unique way of seeing patterns helps me push creative boundaries and bring fresh ideas to life.
By sharing my work online, I connected with a community that truly appreciated what I was creating. Initially, I began with selling physical crochet items, but over time, I realized that designing and selling patterns better aligned with my passion for creativity and my desire to inspire others to embrace their own crochet journeys. Today, I design and sell crochet patterns, creating functional and beautiful pieces that bring joy to both myself and others. Through my patterns, I aim to inspire people to unlock their creativity and connect with the crochet community. I’m also constantly learning new techniques and styles to refine my craft and continue growing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been entirely smooth. When I first started, I wasn’t sure which direction I wanted to take. I considered selling physical items online, doing craft fairs, or focusing on patterns. While I even sold some physical items, I ultimately realized that wasn’t the right path for me. It wasn’t until I began writing and selling crochet patterns that I found where I truly felt fulfilled. Selling patterns aligned perfectly with my vision of creating a business with passive income and time freedom, while also inspiring others to embrace their creativity through crochet and connect with the craft in their own unique ways.
I also discovered that creating items for others didn’t bring me as much joy as I thought it would. I found myself getting attached to the pieces I made, wanting to keep them for myself. This realization helped me understand that selling physical items or taking custom orders wasn’t the right fit. Selling patterns allowed me to focus on my creativity without those emotional attachments, making the whole process far more rewarding.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in creating crochet apparel using only vegan yarns—completely free from animal products. This choice reflects my commitment to sustainability and compassion, allowing me to craft beautiful, functional, and cruelty-free pieces. By working with materials like cotton, bamboo, and other plant-based fibers, I ensure my creations align with my values.
I find a deep sense of fulfillment in knowing that the yarn I choose reflects my values, and each piece I create is a reflection of my commitment to both creativity and compassion. It’s fulfilling to create pieces that reflect my values, and I hope they resonate with others who are seeking a conscious and thoughtful approach to crafting.
I’m most proud of the community I’ve built and the fact that my work not only inspires others to embrace their creativity but also encourages people to consider the impact of the materials they use. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my crochet pieces, whether garments or accessories, are made with integrity and passion.
What sets me apart is my dedication to creating high-quality, stylish pieces that are completely animal-free.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was always creative and curious. I loved being involved in arts and crafts, which allowed me to express myself and explore new ideas. I was the type of person who enjoyed spending time alone, getting lost in a project or learning something new. My interests were often centered around hands-on activities, such as painting, solving puzzles, and creating art.
Personality-wise, I was a bit introverted, preferring smaller groups or solitary activities over large social gatherings. I’ve always been someone who values deep, meaningful connections and found fulfillment in pursuing things that brought me peace and satisfaction, like crocheting today. As I grew older, I realized how much joy I found in being creative and how it aligned with my desire for both personal growth and self-expression. This creativity became the driving force behind my journey into crochet, where I could combine my passion for crafting with a sense of purpose. It was through this creative outlet that I found my true calling, and the more I explored, the clearer it became that this was my path.
