Daily Inspiration: Meet Hank, a yarn boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hank, a yarn boutique.

Hi Hank, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hank a yarn boutique will celebrate 15 years as a Local yarn shop this June! It was orignally founded by 5 owners who shared a passion for quality yarn, and knitting and desired to provide a place to not only find beautiful fibers but also be able to take classes to learn how to knit, with a special focus on sweaters. Over time the ownership has evolved inviting a new manager/owner in 2024 with a re-grand opening and continued commitment to community and creativity all centered around a love for beautiful yarn.

We host events each month to invite new friends to come in and experience the community at our Fiber nights, the last friday of each month and we also host trunk shows, classes, and try to give back to the community through fund raising and collecting handmade items for those in need.

Our staff, with over 300 years of knitting experience, takes great pride in selecting the finest yarns; from hand-dyed wools to luxury silks for that perfect next project. Whether you are a professional or novice, we can assist you in finding exceptional materials at the right budget. From timeless heirloom sweaters to hand knitted or crocheted baby gifts to a blanket or prayer shawl, you will find the stock and color at Hank.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The biggest challenge over the years has been adjusting to obstacles such as Covid where we had to shift our focus in order to still provide our customers and community with access to yarn and projects while also honoring the protocols for safety.

In 2023 the original owners desired to still be a part of the shop but also have more freedom from the day to day operations they were faced with the challenge of finding someone to take the reigns and also maintain the community and heart of what they had built. Thankfully due to the amazing community and support they were able to invite in a new owner to manage the shop, as well as other investors who desired to keep Hank going. This new partnership has really been a gift as it allows the original founders the ability to still be a part of the shop as owners and instructors and at the same time the ability to pass on the day to day and eventually the future of the shop to leadership that honors the hard work , community, and gift that Hank is to our city.

Most recently this past year with tariffs and the wool industry adapting and shifting we have had to be creative in how to still bring beautiful things from all over to the shop. We continue to adapt and find creative ways to bring in new things while trying to also find local artists in the US to support.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Hank specializes in classes and events. We feel community is key with learning and growing. We host 8 Sweater Schools, monthly learn to knit and learn to crochet classes, as well as many other project focused classes in the shop. These classes have evolved into communities that really lean in to support one another in their craft and in life. We also have monthly Fiber Nights to gather and build community. We are always excited to welcome in small business in the fiber industry so that our community can meet them and support their craft. Hank is committed to having a large variety of yarn from all over the world and promoting the missions of these businesses. We feel the commitment to community and learning is what sets us apart from other shops.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk is a part of owning a small business. I believe that the key is that your decisions align with your core values, and that in your risk you are learning and adaptable. When you try something in your shop (maybe a new product or class or event) and it does not go well it is an opportunity to learn and grow and find new and better ways to serve your customers.
