Today we’d like to introduce you to Greg Simms Jr.
Hi Greg, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I wrote music reviews for my local newspaper while I was in high school. My father was a sportswriter for our local newspaper, The Dayton Daily News (Which was my ‘in’). A few years later, when I entered my 20’s, I became a clerk at the same paper. I wrote entertainment/lifestyle articles on the side, and , due to the popularity of those pieces, I was given my own Hip-Hop column in the paper called “Da Newz”. The column was very successful, and it gave the newspaper an influx of new, young readers.
In the ensuing years, I’ve written for several digital/print publications, including two more stints at The Dayton Daily News. I’ve got content all over the place! You can Google my name, and see the many articles I’ve penned and the many subjects I’ve written about.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Anyone who is a writer/media professional knows that the industry was gone through a number of shifts in the past two decades. Especially in the last ten years. Video has now become the preferred medium to consume content for the majority of the American public. Second to that is podcasting. Written articles are MAYBE a distant third. It has not been easy for me to find/keep opportunities, and it’s been the same for many in this industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I write about American culture/pop culture. I create content that sparks conversation so that we…the writer and the reader(s), can talk to/with each other. We are a divided nation, mainly because the ‘sides’ never speak to each other. I write articles to show 1. that we are all human, and 2. being human is wonderful. We’ve all got more in common than we realize, and our concerns are nearly identical.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
I define success by reach. I ask myself when I drop a new article or new content, “Did this have reach? How many people liked it? How many people talked about it? Did they share it with their friends/families members?” That’s my version of victory. The impact of my work.
