Daily Inspiration: Meet Genine Menefield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Genine Menefield.

Hi Genine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story begins as a single mother working three jobs to make ends meet. Equipped with a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and over 18 years of experience in social services. I was overworked, underpaid and had very little time to spend with my own child. I began to search for certifications that did not require you to return to college. I was interested in getting my eyebrows microbladed, so I began to research the process.

As I began my research, I saw how lucrative the permanent makeup industry was and decided that this was the change I needed. If I wanted to support my family and alleviate the stress of balancing being a mother and work. With absolutely no experience in makeup or eyebrows, I committed myself to learning how to do brows. After all, I saw how far it could take me. I decided on a 3-day dual technique training in Atlanta, GA, with The Beauty Connect, LLC. It was a great experience, I learned a lot and left Atlanta eager and excited to start my journey into Permanent Makeup.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been easy. One of the things that I didn’t consider, when taking my course was how new the industry was. That I would leave Atlanta and go back to OHIO, with only 3 days with my instructor. I struggled with EVERYTHING from marketing to gaining clientele. Trying to convince the world that a former therapist was now competent in tattooing eyebrows, was not an easy task. It was a tough road, but I refused to give up. I made a promise to myself that I would devote at least 4 years to my brow business before even considering giving up. This was the same amount of time I committed to my undergraduate degree. Until then, I would absorb all there was to know about eyebrows.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a former therapist turned tattoo artist. I specialize in Semi-permanent eyebrows, and teaching the art of eyebrow enhancements. I recently graduated esthetician school, to further my expertise in eyebrows. I enjoy all things skincare, but BROWS are my passion. In addition to providing brows to my clients, I teach and give people the skills to begin their own career in brows. Providing group trainings, one on one trainings, and tattoo apprenticeships. It is my goal to provide my clients confidence through mentorship (students) and beauty (clients). As an Eyebrow Instructor I am known for my patience, adaptability, and skills in listening and communication. As a Brow Specialist, I am known for my brow mapping skills, attention to detail, and most importantly my genuine spirit. As a former therapist, I understand the importance of work/life balance, and self-care.

My therapist background, and healing spirit makes it easy for my clients to open up and be vulnerable. Vulnerability in this industry is feeling comfortable enough to allow a complete stranger to see you without makeup, more specifically without brows. I build a relationship of trust with my maturity, and expertise, so that my clients feels relaxed enough to close their eyes and let me tattoo their face. ( I know sounds crazy right.).

Building rapport helps me understand and meet my client’s beauty needs. As a result of the pandemic, we have all come accustomed to wearing face masks, this highlights our facial features specifically the eyes and eyebrows. Eyebrows frame the face, open the eyes and create a youthful appearance. I am most proud of my commitment to growing my brow business. I did not have any plan or savings; I saw the potential for growth and put my FAITH in God’s ability to create a space for me in a growing industry.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The qualities and characteristics that are important to success are, being transparent with my clients and delivering quality work. Continuing my education and keeping up on the latest beauty trends and products. Professionalism, cleanliness, and consistency in the services I provide to my clients.
