Hi Ericka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Written in Flame Candle Co. began its journey in 2019 as a passion to create candles based off of particular moments and characters from books.
As avid readers, we found that many authors are very specific about the aroma of locations and characters throughout their books. We wanted to recreate those descriptions by bringing them to life in candles so that book lovers like ourselves could be taken back to those special moments.
Not only did we want to create candles, but we wanted to make them safely. From personal experience of chronic headaches and year-round allergies, we needed candles that didn’t give us a migraine after burning it for 5 minutes. We researched, experimented, and tested many different materials for months before we found a solution that allowed us to burn candles without some negative impact on our bodies: organic, all-natural soy wax, lead-free cotton wicks, and toxin-free fragrance oils did the trick!
Although our business started from a reader’s passion, it has become so much more than that! We found our love for creativity again, we found a community of amazing people, and we have been able to help and provide those with sensitivities with the ability to enjoy candles again.
As this business continues to grow, we take pride in the fact that all of our products are organic, vegan & toxin-free – safe for yourself, your family, friends, and pets at home!
Our mission is to continue to recreate moments of feelings, scenery, holidays, and books to light your creative flame and inspire you to return to those beautiful moments and dreams once again.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been entirely smooth. There have been many challenges I’ve faced since starting this business, and I have made many changes. However, through those changes, I found and honed in on what inspired me to start this business, and it has been growing ever since. I rebranded the look of my business, began attending occasional pop-up events around NE Ohio, and started showing my face more on WIF’s social media page to connect with my followers. Each of these changes has been tremendous for the growth of my business over the last two years, and I’m very grateful and thankful for that.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a full-time job, I teach English Language Arts to 8th graders, which is so much fun but can be really overwhelming at times with the job as a teacher. Having my small business has truly allowed me a place in my life where I can relax, use more of my creativity, and be in my hobby-loving element.
As the owner and candle creator of Written in Flame Candle Co., I specialize in making candles; wax melts, and room sprays that are all organic, vegan, and cruelty-free products safe for everyone, including pets, and especially those that experience migraines and allergies throughout the year. We are set apart from other companies because of our pure, organic ingredients, as well as our bookish-themed candles for the book lovers.
I have always been a cozy candle lover, but I am someone who would get migraines within minutes of burning candles that contain chemicals. I am very proud to have specialized in creating products that others like me can use without causing harm to our bodies by simply wanting to enjoy a cozy environment with the warm glow of a candle burning.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
If someone is starting a business of their own, no matter what kind of small business it is, think hard about the specific audience you want to reach. I think my biggest lesson from when I started off is that I spent some much time researching how to make safe products that I didn’t take the time to think about the look of my products or the particular audience that I wanted to reach. In time, I found that for myself and my business. But looking back, I wish I would have taken the time to think about all aspects, especially the visual aspect of my products before I officially started selling them.
