Today we’d like to introduce you to Deuce Grams.
Hi Deuce, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began creative writing (short stories, poems, scripts) and songwriting at the age of 9. A few years later I joined a local church’s choir and began to incorporate singing into my music. After years of honing my writing skills, I finally began recording music in my senior year of high school at the age of 17. Since then, I’ve made hundreds of songs, headlined shows, opened up for major industry artists, performed at festivals in multiple states including Ohio, Michigan, Louisiana, Alabama, Kentucky, etc.
Recently, I’ve been creating my own concepts for my music videos and as shown in ‘Woodstock’ and ‘Bands in the Morning’, they are very unique and offer the viewer something more than the average music video. Apart from music, I recently played a role in an independent film releasing this August titled: ‘It’s Just a Lifestyle’, where I’ll be playing Cj, a man with more going on than what initially meets the eye. I plan to participate in more films as I advance my music and acting careers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I think the toughest thing is getting people to believe at first. It wasn’t until I released my music video for ‘Ain’t Just Friends’ that a lot of people took me seriously.
Since more and more people want to be rappers these days, most potential listeners write you off before they even hear what you have to offer. Another obstacle is just trying to maintain mental health. Most artists and just humans, in general, are very emotional and sometimes this can lead to depression which leads to a lack of art being created and work being done. It can be very hard to get out of a funk once you’re in one.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an Independent Recording Artist although as of late, my resumé has expanded and includes Actors as well. I specialize in making a blended genre of music which if I had to put it in a category, I’d call it Alternative Hip Hop. I’m known for making unique music and visuals to go along with it. I’m most proud of everything I’ve done as a whole. To know that I funded it all and created my own concepts for songs, album/EP covers, and treatments for videos is very satisfying since most major artists have to pay other people to be creative for them. I think what sets me apart is the fact that each song, project, and video I release is completely different from the last and I will continue to push the envelope of creativity for as long as my career lasts.
We’d love to hear about what you think about risk-taking?
I think taking risks is very important. Usually where there is a high risk there is also an equally high reward. As an independent artist, you take risks with every release. You risk people not listening, not liking, or just hating in general on your music. But on the opposite end you will be rewarded by the supporters and fans who always listen, and the new listeners who like and love what you offer as an artist. I believe that without risks, very little people would be successful. I’ve taken risks on traveling to do shows not knowing how many people will be there, or even if my car will make it there and back (but fortunately it has). And usually when I do, it’s a packed show, and end up gaining followers, listeners, supporters.
