Daily Inspiration: Meet Dan Wilson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dan Wilson.

Hi Dan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started out playing music in the church. There was an abnormally large number of really good guitarists. I soaked up everything I could from them. I was exposed to jazz by my great Uncle, C.W. Smith. He played Wes Montgomery and Jimmy Smith’s “Down by the Riverside,” and I was hooked. I went to Hiram College for undergrad, and Youngstown State University for grad school. I played gigs all around Ohio during college and grad school. I eventually was recommended for the gig with Joey Defrancesco in 2014, and that started my international career, including being nominated for a Grammy and recording two albums with Van Morrison. After playing with Joey, I joined Christian Mcbride’s band, Tip City, and recorded my solo album “Vessels of Wood and Earth” on Mack Avenue Records, produced by Mcbride.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s had its fair share of ups and downs. Learning all the great music gives a great sense of accomplishment and purpose. Covid was especially rough. Not being able to play music for live audiences can be soul-crushing if that’s what gives you a sense of purpose. Thankfully, things are opening back up.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I play and teach jazz guitar. I also compose and arrange music. I’m most proud of being one of the students of my first guitar mentor, Arthur Lee Gale. I think what sets me apart from others is my commitment and near-obsession with learning repertoire.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a particularly shy child. I loved basketball and hunting. Those were my two great passions before I got into music. Hunting is still a great passion.
