Daily Inspiration: Meet Courtney Halter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Halter.

Hi Courtney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Looking back, I realize my career has never really been about a specific industry—it’s always been about people, relationships, and helping build a stronger community.

I started my professional career at Aultman Health System in Canton, OH while I was still in college. I worked full-time night shifts so I could attend classes during the day, putting myself through school while earning my business degree. What began as a job quickly became a 15-year career filled with incredible opportunities to grow as a leader. Aultman taught me so much about servant leadership, collaboration, strategic thinking, and the importance of building meaningful relationships. As Stark County’s largest employer, it also connected me to the community in ways that continue to shape both my career and my personal life today.

As leadership changed over the years, I felt a pull to explore what else I was capable of. I realized I wanted to create my own path and make an impact in a more visible, community-focused way. That journey led me through several meaningful roles—from a pediatric nonprofit clinic to my alma mater, Walsh University, where I had the privilege of helping adults continue their education. Each experience taught me something different about leadership and purpose.

When the opportunity came to join Downtown Canton Partnership, it felt like another step toward the work I was meant to do. Through projects like Mural Fest and collaborations with ArtsinStark, I saw firsthand how the arts can transform neighborhoods, strengthen local businesses, and create places where people genuinely want to gather.

At the same time, my appreciation for the arts became deeply personal. Watching my stepdaughter discover art as a way to process anxiety and emotional challenges changed my perspective completely. I saw her confidence grow, her creativity flourish, and her future open up in ways I never expected. It reminded me that the arts aren’t simply something we enjoy—they can truly change lives.

When the opportunity to join ArtsinStark as Vice President of Development came along, it felt like everything I had experienced throughout my career had prepared me for this role. Today, I have the privilege of connecting people, businesses, and foundations with opportunities to invest in the arts—not just because they enrich our lives, but because they strengthen education, improve wellness, fuel economic development, and help create vibrant communities where people want to live, work, and raise their families.

At the heart of it all, my career has always been about bringing people together. Whether through healthcare, education, downtown development, or the arts, I’ve learned that lasting change happens when people care enough about their community to work together. If I can inspire others to invest their time, talents, or resources to make Stark County an even better place, then I know I’m doing the work I was meant to do.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all—and honestly, I’m grateful for that.

One of my earliest challenges was simply getting started. I worked full-time night shifts while putting myself through college, attending classes during the day. It wasn’t easy, but it taught me discipline, resilience, and that hard work really can open doors.

Professionally, the biggest challenge came after spending 15 years at Aultman Health System. Leaving an organization that had given me so many opportunities was both exciting and intimidating. I knew I wanted to grow, challenge myself, and make a broader impact in the community, but I didn’t have every step mapped out.

The journey wasn’t perfectly linear. I accepted roles that taught me valuable lessons, including one that ultimately wasn’t the right fit. At the time, it felt discouraging, but looking back, it was one of the most important experiences of my career. It forced me to really ask myself who I wanted to be as a leader and what kind of work truly fulfilled me. Sometimes you have to experience what isn’t right before you fully recognize what is.

I’ve also learned that leadership isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to keep learning, surround yourself with great people, and remain open to new opportunities—even when they feel a little scary.

Today, I’m incredibly thankful for every twist in my journey because each one helped shape the person and leader I am. If everything had gone exactly according to plan, I don’t think I would have ended up in a role that feels so aligned with my purpose.

Looking back, I’ve realized that growth doesn’t happen when everything is comfortable. It happens when you’re willing to step into the unknown, trust yourself, and keep moving forward. Every challenge has helped me become a better leader, a stronger connector, and someone who never stops looking for ways to make a positive impact.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Today, I have the privilege of serving as the Vice President of Development for ArtsinStark, where I connect individuals, businesses, foundations, and community leaders with opportunities to invest in the arts and strengthen our community. While fundraising is certainly part of my role, I’ve always believed it’s really about building meaningful relationships and helping people see the impact they can have.

Throughout my career, I’ve found that my greatest strength is connecting people. I enjoy bringing together organizations, volunteers, donors, businesses, and community partners around a shared vision. Whether it’s leading a community fundraising campaign, developing new partnerships, or working alongside volunteers on local initiatives, I love creating opportunities for people to be part of something bigger than themselves.

I’m especially proud of helping lead ArtsinStark’s annual Campaign for the Arts. Watching hundreds of volunteers, businesses, and donors come together each year to ensure the arts continue to thrive across Stark County is incredibly rewarding. Seeing our community rally around a shared purpose reminds me that generosity truly has the power to transform lives.

If there’s one thing that sets me apart, it’s that I lead with relationships. I believe fundraising begins long before anyone makes a gift. It starts by listening, understanding what matters to someone, and building authentic relationships over time. When people feel valued and connected, amazing things can happen.

Beyond my professional role, I’m passionate about giving back through organizations like Leadership Stark County, the Aultman Women’s Board, and the Heart of Ohio Diaper Bank. Those experiences continue to remind me that every organization has an important role to play, and we’re strongest when we work together.

Outside of work, you’ll usually find me spending time with my family. I love cooking and grilling—especially creating my own recipes—and some of my favorite memories are made camping or riding dirt bikes with my fiancé and kids. Those moments keep me grounded and remind me why building a strong community matters. At the end of the day, we’re all working to create places where our families can thrive and make lasting memories together.

I hope people don’t remember me simply for the dollars raised or the events I helped organize. I hope they remember that I cared deeply about this community, brought people together, and inspired others to invest in making Stark County an even better place to live, work, and raise a family.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is the people in my life and the community I’m fortunate to call home.

As a mom, I want my children to grow up seeing that success isn’t just measured by what you accomplish personally—it’s measured by how you treat others, how you give back, and how you leave your community better than you found it. I hope they see that serving others and making a positive difference isn’t something you do when you have extra time—it’s simply part of who you are.

That same mindset carries into my career and volunteer work. I care deeply about building relationships, connecting people, and creating opportunities that strengthen our community. Whether it’s through the arts, education, leadership development, or supporting local nonprofits, I believe we’re all responsible for helping create places where people feel connected, inspired, and proud to live.

I also believe that every person has something valuable to contribute. Sometimes it’s financial support, sometimes it’s time, expertise, encouragement, or simply showing up. When people come together around a shared purpose, incredible things can happen.

At the end of the day, what matters most to me is making a positive impact—on my family, on the people I work alongside, and on the community that has given me so much throughout my life.
