Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Wilson.
Hi Christina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
This journey started for me some time ago. I have always been active growing up…I played softball, basketball, track, soccer, and tennis. My Mom kept me involved in several sports and for young girls that is so important in building confidence, self-esteem, and leadership. I played from elementary through high school and a bit my first year at the collegiate level. Juggling sports, academics, and being away from home became a bit too much, so I no longer played sports, and my health fell by the wayside. I knew once I graduated, I needed to find some activities that I enjoyed to keep me moving, feeling good in my body, and for my mental health. I started going to the gym, strength training, and running a lot…however, the impact of running become too much on my knees and ankles, so I was introduced to cycling and never looked back. I took some classes and eventually became a certified Spin instructor. I had been teaching cycling for some time then decided to look into gaining my personal training certification. I understand that one size does not fit all when it comes to one’s health and living well, so opening myself to other areas of fitness would allow me the opportunity to help people in other areas that they may enjoy. I definitely consider myself a servant leader, and helping people in areas of health and wellness helps to fulfill my purpose. I was teaching classes and offering personal training. Then COVID rocked the world. Some may not consider the fitness industry as a service industry – many usually think of bars and restaurants – yet, the fitness industry is a service area that was heavily impacted by COVID and our inability to conduct in-person fitness classes. For many, exercise provides a healthy outlet and a way to relieve stress and anxiety. It allows people to take care of themselves first before taking on their families, work, committees, and other obligations.
As they say, “put your mask on first before assisting others.” With in-person contact being shut down, I looked to other methods to keep people moving, and so I started teaching classes virtually. I still teach virtually as many enjoy the convenience of being at home and still having the ability to move and take care of themselves first. In-person options are also available – one day I hope to have my own dedicated space. For now, I travel to people, and they travel to me with events set up outdoors in several locations. It’s therapeutic to be outdoors, even more so when we can move our bodies together and release our minds from the pressures of the world. I love it because it allows us to still be together, be safe, and do something that keeps us healthy and living well.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
COVID changed things for myself and many others. I had to get creative, and competing in a Peloton market was a struggle – yet, I had to keep one thing in mind. Yes, Peloton and other big brand companies are great, but they are not me, and I had to stay true to that. I know I offer more personalized attention to help friends/clients achieve their goals. Offering check-ins, making myself personally accessible, and offering nutrition solutions as well. Sometimes we need a bit more, and I help to offer that, and that is something the BIGGER brands cannot offer. Personalized attention can be important for one’s health and wellness journey, and I try to provide that as much as I can.
What matters most to you?
My passion is movement and sharing that with the world – anyone that is willing and open to exploring it are invited to join me. It matters because it is essential to our mental health as well as our physical health. The combination is undeniable. I always check in with my clients and ask them how they are feeling – before, during, and after a workout. I like to impress upon them… don’t worry about the numbers. That can cause more stress – make the time to move your body and choose fuel (what we consume in our bodies) that is going to help us show up and be our best. Make the right choices for you and your life, and let the results be a by-product of your choosing better for yourself and being an inspiration to yourself and others around you.
