Daily Inspiration: Meet Cathy Lyons

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cathy Lyons.  

Hi Cathy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I majored in Photojournalism (PJ) at Western Kentucky University (WKU). After college, I interned at the Cincinnati Enquirer and worked as a freelancer for the Enquirer newspaper for 10 years. It was wonderful because I got to meet all kinds of people and tell their stories. I learned quickly that photos can inspire people to help, and to empathize with others, and even to help us learn about ourselves. We are all so inter-connected and it’s great to share feelings through photographs. A great picture can move us to greater understanding and love. 

When I was at the Enquirer, I was also freelancing for our business, Lyons Photography, Inc., as my husband is also a WKU-PJ grad. I interviewed for a national NGO during this time and landed the gig. I’d never been to California, much less Africa, and I ended up traveling the world documenting people receiving medical help in all kinds of conditions. About a year later, my husband, Mark, also started documenting these missions. We did this nationally and internationally for over 20 years. 

Simultaneously, we were raising our family. We have two amazing kids who have families of their own now. While we were raising them, we photographed for corporate/editorial clients, arts organizations/non-profits, and events. We still do this today and love it. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest challenges all photographers face when they shoot outdoors is the weather, the time of day, the season of the year, and how the light is wherever I am. Photography is writing with light, and I think about it constantly. Being able to leverage the light in the best possible way for my clients is something I’m always mindful of…after that comes moment which is directly related to how relaxed and comfortable they are. And I struggle with shyness at times, but if you asked my family, friends, and clients, they wouldn’t believe you because I am often loud and love to make people laugh. The worst is a picture where someone is “breaking the pattern” by not smiling or vice versa. 

I like creating in beautiful light with relaxed people, but both of those things can be tricky. When they come together…it’s amazing, and I am always so grateful. 

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I think I am known for my work with children…getting them to relax and telling their story in a creative way or with a great moment. Some of my most favorite pictures are of children expressing themselves. I also love photographing God’s Creation—the flowers, bees, and landscapes. 

What do you think about happiness?
All my life, I have sought out art of all kinds. On a daily basis, I incorporate art and making things into my everyday life. For example, I do Bible journaling; I teach photography/art camp, I love to grow flowers for my neighbors, and have fun making watercolor or photo cards for others. Oh yes, and I absolutely love to cook for other people. I see my life as an opportunity to love on others and share my creative talents. I have persisted through hard times and good by NOT GIVING UP. God is my all in all.
