Daily Inspiration: Meet Billy Delfs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Billy Delfs.

Billy Delfs

Billy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started photographing friends who rode BMX, which led to being published with a 6-page feature story in a U.K. Magazine. I was just starting college and learning photography. I then assisted photographers in a few commercial studios in Cleveland before being accepted into the International Center of Photography in NYC. Once I finished there, I went on to work for magazines based in Ny and moved back to Cleveland where I worked with Advertising agencies, design firms, and non-profits.

For years I wanted to return to NY, after ICP I had to return for financial reasons, so once I was able to afford to in 2020, I did. It was at the beginning of the pandemic, and the first year it wasn’t the best time to return; however, in 2021, I landed a 2-year contract with an agency and traveled a lot making portraits throughout the country and working with a great team. I realized then that I found what I was looking for all those years after I had to return to Cleveland. – so, once the contract ended, I chose to return to Cleveland. To come back with more experience and renewed appreciation for where I am in this career.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Generally, being a photographer is completely rewarding. Meeting people, helping them with images they need, telling stories that inspire, and even creating work that people print and frame. The challenges change. Years ago, the obstacle was simple, stay true to myself and make work I love which attracts clients. Now it’s saturation.

Something I’ve noticed with photography is that everyone became a photographer with the phone, and those images are used more for promotion. Handheld snapshots are becoming more popular and accepted with little to no production. Trends, especially when they don’t last long, can be a challenge.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
When I am photographing people, I believe everyone has a story to tell and what they do is important. Whether someone is an artist, tradesmen, nurse, writer, or chef my time with them is the same. I look for what they love in what they do. Creating a space when I am there with my camera that allows them to be in their element. Bringing forth their confidence so others can learn about them.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
Although I try to keep up with current events, I’m more drawn to history. I love learning about a place I’m visiting or want to go to based on its architecture, the historical food, or settlement. With people, I’m fascinated by successful people who’ve lasted years in their field. I love when having a conversation with someone they refer a podcast that is by an expert to dig deeper into. I’m constantly learning, so anything that offers insight based on research is what I like most.
