Daily Inspiration: Meet Angelina Mitchell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angelina Mitchell

Hi Angelina , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a film student at Wright State University, where the diversity is almost nonexistent. I didn’t see a space around me or in the local film industry that celebrated black women. Yet, I seen so many black women who have came out of Dayton, and out of the Wright State Motion Picture Production program who were successful in the film industry. I felt like there needed to be a space created to celebrate these women and provide a safe haven for the women who were going into the same industry. So, I came up with the idea for the Dayton Black Women’s Film Festiva.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has been a surprisingly smooth road that I’ve had to work hard to ensure the smoothness of, but I’ve had the most incredible support system of black women in the industry who have been with me every step of the way who made the entirety of planning the festival very smooth.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a filmmaker, but I am also the founder of the first and only film festival in the city of Dayton for black women by black women.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
With the current climate of the world and how hateful people can be it’s definitely risky to celebrate minorities in spaces where they aren’t celebrated. So I would definitely consider myself a risk-taker.
