Daily Inspiration: Meet Alexzandra Roy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexzandra Roy.

Hi Alexzandra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I began shooting films about a decade ago on road trips with my internet best friend.

Eventually, I upgraded from disposable cameras to random points and shoots. I started developing my own photos in my kitchen right before the pandemic happened. I think seeing the process from start to finish is just another fun aspect of what film has to offer. I like to capture moments on film because it feels more permanent than a phone. I guess shooting live music has been a main focus of mine for some time. I feel lucky to have met so many friends through it all!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think all art is full of road bumps. I’ve dealt with a lot of creative blocks since the pandemic. For a while there I wasn’t sure what to take photos of while locked at home, so I spent most of the time with my dog and garden. There are definitely a lot of things about the film I still have to learn. I just try to have fun in the process.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’ve tried to use digital cameras, and as much as they offer, I somehow end up back with analog on the brain. The film feels endless. I feel best when I’m learning new ways to create and film provides that for me. I have the most fun getting to collaborate with others and shoot portraits.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk-taking is something I’m too familiar with. Every time I choose to try a new camera, film stock, editing style, or developing process I risk the outcome. I try to roll with the punches.

Most days I have no idea what I’m doing. I try to remind myself that even if something is born out of an accident, then that’s the way it was meant to be. I’ve lost a lot of possible good shots by being a little overboard on the risk-taking. What I’ve learned from loss has made it all the more important.

Pricing:

  • Currently, I shoot live music, portraits, album covers, and product placement, and will collaborate with costs varying from $150-400. I can be reached through my website for consolation.
