Daily Inspiration: Meet Abattoir Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abattoir Gallery. Them and their team share their story with us below:

The abattoir is a space for contemporary art in the historic Hildebrandt Building, a former meat processing plant in the resurgent Clark-Fulton neighborhood of Cleveland, located between the West 25th Street corridor and Ohio City. The gallery presents a program of local, regional, and national artists, designed to elicit thought-provoking conversation and discussion.

Lisa Kurzner and Rose Burlingham opened the gallery in the spring of 2020 in the first months of the pandemic. Burlingham, a gallerist and curator, and Kurzner an independent curator, consultant, and art historian first worked together on Front International; they strive to bring an invigorating perspective to the Cleveland art scene.

They work to bring the best artists of Cleveland to other parts of the country participating in art fairs such as NADA Miami last fall and Expo Chicago in spring 2023. This past summer Abattoir exhibited at Foreland Studios in the Hudson Valley and will be there again in April.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We opened a few months into the pandemic and due to restrictions got off the ground slowly. Now going into our third year we are still finding our audience and investigating what sort of program we can provide for the Cleveland art community. We show a mix of the best local artists, and there are many, along with artists from other parts of the country we hope to continue to engage a locally focused city.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Rose Burlingham moved to Cleveland in 2019, she was a painter and writer and had galleries in Manhattan before that. Lisa Kurzner has lived in Cleveland since she was 20??, she lived in London, Brussels, and Atlanta. She is a curator and art historian and was the Cleveland Curator of the first Front International exhibit.
