Today we’d like to introduce you to Wujian Wang.
Hi Wujian, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I experienced the Renaissance Apprenticeship learning style in my BFA program at Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, where students’ primary goal was to imitate professors’ styles. While understanding the need to build up techniques, I was reluctant to merely conform to other artists’ styles. Desiring to pursue real fine art training, I transferred to the Columbus College of Art & Design, studying interdisciplinary art. There, I was completely amazed by the diverse opportunities and actively engaged in open forums, student-oriented projects utilizing the 3D Printing & Laser Cut Lab, Sculpture & Metal Shop, Ceramic Lab, and Fashion Design Lab. Having fully benefited from all these high-tech resources while being inspired by contemporary artists like Ann Hamilton, I designed a new fine art technique that combines screen printing, painting, film photography, and Photoshop for my BFA thesis project, Breaking Barriers & The Lost Teenagers. I believe that the integration of fine arts with technology leads to deeper appreciation and comprehension of the contemporary art world.
Upon graduation, I continued to develop my skills in Photographic and Electronic Media at Maryland Institute College of Art. I worked closely with Professor Sonja Kelley on the research about Overseas Chinese Porcelain and with Professor Bill Gaskins on my MFA thesis Animation Project, The Miraged Fine China. Continuously inspired and empowered, I decided to become an art educator myself to support my future students in discovering, appreciating, and creating modern art with the latest digital technology in Manhattan.
I am also a professional photographer with Sony & Hasselblad camera. I have done lots of collaborations with Ohio local talents, including dancers, contortionists, models, and visual artists. The bonds and kindness among artists community have been motivated me to create more inspiring artwork.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has been challenging through my art career. It is not an easy path, but art is my true passion. Therefore, I am willing to take any challenges and move forward. As an international artist, the biggest struggle for me is to merge in the local community and make friends. At first, I felt like an isolated cactus in Columbus, Ohio. Everyone seems busy. Then I decided to reach out to local talents more and did as many collaborations as many as possible. I was surprised to see that many people became my friends and they love my photographs.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a digital art educator, sound designer, photographer, and visual artist who captures the conscious and unconscious moments that are tragic, profound, and ongoing events related to evoke resonance and deep thinking. I am known for my painterly photographs. I am proud of my ability to absorb essences from all fine art & digital art forms and create my own style photographs and multidisciplinary artwork.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Make a living by making artwork is possible, and as long as you are truly passionate about art, artist could live a good life while inspire others to create something meaningful and beautiful.
