Today we’d like to introduce you to Vy Pham.
Hi Vy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Vy (vee) Pham . I am a Vietnamese-American digital and film photographer. I was fortunate enough to grow up and experience both cultures. I was born in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam then moved to America with my family when I was 12 years old. I can read, write and speak Vietnamese, which is also a quality that helps my day job. Currently, I am a mom of four cats, taking classes and discovering myself.
To be honest, I never thought I could accomplish much in life. These last couple of years have proven me wrong. I was able to accomplish small goals and experience opportunities that I thought were unobtainable. I am so thankful for the community around me. Those who keep supporting, inspiring, and pushing me to become a better person/ artist. I would never be “here” if I did not have these people in my life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I feel like nothing in life is a smooth road. There are always twists and turns, but I think that is also the fun part of life. If the road is constantly smooth, you will eventually get bored. As a photographer, I struggle the most with self-doubt. I never thought I would be able to pick up a camera and create pleasing images. I never thought my work was “good” enough. I just did not believe in myself. You kinda have to keep training your mind to not have these negative thoughts. This feels impossible sometimes, but the only way to get passed that bumpy part is to keep on going.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am having a lot of fun exploring different types of photography. Portraiture is currently the majority of my work. I find people fascinating, I enjoy the individuality and uniqueness of the people I meet. I love to incorporate a story or a bit of them into every one of my images. Everyone is different, no one can be you and vice versa.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I believe I can connect to my subjects. My eagerness to learn about them supports the creativity of my work. Mental strength is also one of them. Even though it is hard, you have to keep believing in yourself. Trust yourself. Be open and listen, while supporting others along the way. I am very thankful for my parents because of what they gave me and who I am today.
