Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia “Sadhu” Reeves.
Hi Sylvia “Sadhu”, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started off singing at church, in the youth choir. I knew this was something I would always love to do when I had to sing a solo for the first time. I was around 5 years old, and the was a big church conference type gathering being hosted at my church and they asked all the kids what they wanted to share or present. Right away, I excitedly said, “I want to sing a song!” I remember not even being nervous, I went over it briefly with the older kids and when I started singing, the people enjoyed it and joined in. As I was walking back to my seat, this old Church Mother, reached out and gave me $5. I didn’t know it then but from that moment on, I was officially a working artist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I wouldn’t say it’s been all smooth but God has a peculiar way of showing me that this is exactly what I’m supposed to be doing. It shows up when folks give me free beats and studio time, or when the people around me believe in me and are willing to invest their time and money into what I’m doing. If there have been struggles, I’ve been blessed with support from people who have championed me to the point where our struggles become our triumphs.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I make music. I sing, rap, write. I love writing, I’m a lyricist at heart. The words are always the most impactful part of a song in my eyes. I would like to say that I’m known for my writing skills at this point in my journey. One day, I’d like to be known for my range in artistic expression, I’d hate to be put in a box. Right now, I’m mostly proud to be an artist from Ohio. Cleveland to be exact. Sometimes I feel like it’s giving “Big City, with southern vibes”. So many amazing artists have come from Ohio and I’m most proud to be among them. I’ve heard people say that I can write a mean hook and my harmonies are pretty tight. I recently released the second part of my mini EP series, Soul Pk. Pt 1 & 2. I believe they equally stand apart in many ways, even from each other. As far as K-pop to Country- Blues.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Oh yes! Absolutely! No one gets anywhere or does anything alone, think about it. There have been so many people to champion me, where do I begin? For one, my family. My parents, Sylvia and Fredrick for having such great taste in music and my siblings, Fredrick, in particular who is also a musician and first inspired me to create my own music, by watching him do it. My sisters, Mellissa and Gabrielle for creative and financial support. Second are my friends and supporters. People who come to shows, buy the music and T-shirt! My band mates in S.Y.S., AM The Queen and DJ Red-I. My childhood Choir Director, Kenneth Tyus and Writer- Musician, Jon-Micheal Thomas. Also, Wallace Settles, who has been the most instrumental when it comes to bookings, small and large. Joe Hairston has given me so much free game, and mentorship. My manager Nikko and my label Live And Let Records, founded by Brea Jordai.
