Conversations with Summer Beckley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Summer Beckley.

Hi Summer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
It all started back in 2020 while I was scrolling through social media. I kept seeing photos and videos of beautiful face painting designs, and I thought to myself, “I could do that!” So I went on Amazon and ordered my very first face painting kit.
When my kit arrived, I was so excited that I started painting right away. I painted myself, my daughter, my niece, and my nephew. There was just one problem—I was TERRIBLE! I couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong, so I put my paints away for a while.

About a year later, I decided to give it another try. I did a TON of research and quickly realized two very important things: first, I had accidentally bought oil-based paint instead of water-based face paint. Second, I learned that not all face paints sold online are safe or high quality. (Please only use products that are specifically made for face painting.)

Once I found the right professional products, I ordered everything I needed and got back to practicing.

Learning face painting didn’t happen overnight. I spent countless hours practicing on myself, my daughter, and other family members whenever I had free time. I also volunteered to paint at family gatherings and friends’ parties to gain experience and build my confidence. At the time, I was working full-time in a doctor’s office, so every spare moment I had was dedicated to improving my skills.

When I finally felt confident enough to charge for my work, I started advertising on social media. Before long, I booked my first birthday parties. I had so much fun, and after those first few events, I knew this was exactly what I was meant to do.

After gaining more experience, I made one of the biggest decisions of my life—I left my full-time job to chase my dream of becoming my own boss and pursuing face painting full-time.

Today, I’ve been face painting full-time for two years, and I couldn’t be happier. I truly love what I do. Seeing a child’s face light up when they look in the mirror for the first time is one of the most rewarding feelings in the world. Knowing that I can create smiles, spark imaginations, and make people feel magical is something I’ll never take for granted.

My goal is to spread the joy of face painting and remind everyone that you’re never too old to feel beautiful, magical, confident, or simply have fun.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. There are so many techniques to learn, as well as how to properly apply the paint. Face painting requires a great deal of time, practice, and dedication to develop the necessary skills.

Finding events and reaching out to organizers to see if they already have a face painter also takes time. Establishing a spot at events requires patience, persistence, and a lot of communication.

I am definitely known for my face painting. I consider myself a freehand painter, as I use very little to no stencil work, aside from small details such as dots and stars. I take great pride in my work because I have worked hard to develop a unique face painting style that sets my designs apart.

What makes you happy?
Seeing everyone face light up after seeing their face makes me so happy! This is because it makes me feel good knowing I made someone feel so confident and happy about themselves. That is always my goal in face painting, to make everyone smile 😊
