Conversations with Shaun Skerchock and Kat Roe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shaun Skerchock and Kat Roe.

Hi Shaun and Kat, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Shaun: I have been tattooing for over 18 years. I always had a love for art, but out of high school i didn’t know what to do. I persued a nursing career because of stability and what my parents wanted. This lead to 3 years of nursing school, none of it resonated with me. I was getting tattooed at the time and realized that i could make a living off of my art. This prompted me to drop out after perusing nursing. During the 18 years of tattooing I saw the ups and downs, a lot of downs. While filling my body with toxins through bad habits, food, environment etc. That leads to the next part of our journey. In 2023 we followed our intuition and started focusing on health and nutrition and that greatly impacted my tattooing. So then we became Nutrition & Lifestyle Coaches for tattoo artists to help them see the importance of nutrition and how it impacts our careers as artists.

Kat: I have been tattooing for over 7 years. I was never great at art, so I never tried perusing it that much. I was a server and worked at restaurants until 2018. I realized early on how tattoos can make you feel like a new person and so much more like your true self. I loved that. And as time went on I realized that I wanted to be able to create that experience for others. I started working as a desk girl at the tattoo shop Shaun worked at, late 2016-2017. I then also realized that I would need to learn how to draw! So I started studying all of the resources I could find. Drew almost all day every day for an entire year before I felt more confident in my art. And after about 5 years of tattooing is when we started our Nutrition Coaching business to help tattoo artists regain control of their health and their creativity. So many tattoo artists deal with chronic pain, disease and other things that hinder them from living their best lives and creating their best art.

We are here to help heal the tattoo community!

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Shaun: late nights, long hours, overwhelm, overwork, drug addictions, being homeless for a little bit, eating terrible food, trying to find my place in tattooing. I had anxiety my entire life and it affected my tattooing/interacting with clients.

Multiple shop startup attempts.

And switching lifestyles from eating a diet full of processed, highly acidic and mucus forming foods to one that is predominantly raw fruits and veggies was definitely a struggle at first. But well worth the results.

We also both did a 40 day juice fast as a transition into this lifestyle. That was an amazing (&tough) experience

Kat: overcoming imposter syndrome, and the feeling of not being good enough. It also took me years to even start making consistent money with my tattoos. I found myself working a lot for very little money at first.

I dealt with a lot of anxiety in the beginning (the first 5 years) of my career. THAT was tough. But thanks to nutrition and mindfulness, that is long gone!

Another struggle came when we had to leave the shop we were at and start our own private studio.

Switching lifestyles & doing our juice fast. Honestly one of the hardest, most worthwhile things we have EVER done.

And the struggle lately is finding the best way to bridge a more mindful lifestyle change to tattoo artists.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
