Conversations with Sewing Love By Gloria Rosas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sewing Love By Gloria Rosas.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I grew up in south Texas. My interest in Fashion Design, Art & Sewing started shortly after I graduated from Raymondville High School class of 2001 and after completing one year at Texas A&M University. It was during my summer break 2002 from the university that a commercial came on the tv where I could take classes and become a fashion designer at a Fashion School in Long Beach, California. I called the phone number listed in the commercial and requested a catalog. When the catalog arrived, I brought my idea to my mother. Right way my mother said no. So, I went on convincing her and she finally said, if I could pay for my plane ticket to California myself it would be okay if I went. I was ready to experience my own adventure in pursuing my dreams of becoming a Fashion Designer. I found a summer job to help purchase my plane ticket to LAX. It was fall of 2002 with only $100 in my pocket and a plan that I landed at LAX. As soon as I arrived at the Fashion School, I started applying for work. I lived on campus and found work right away at the Financial Aid office working at the front desk. This was also my first time ever out of the state of Texas by myself at age 19. Fast forward to my last semester, I took a class in Advance Illustration and took a class in Advance Sewing. At the end of the school year my assignment for Advance Illustration class was to have completed a Fashion Designer portfolio full of illustrations drawn by me. The portfolio had to include 10 to 12 collections. I was to choose three outfits of one of the collections in my portfolio that were going to be featured and worn by fashion runway models for the end of school year Fashion Show before graduation. My advance sewing and all my sewing classes at the Fashion School were where I learned to sew and to bring my design to life. It was an amazing experience to see my hard work and dedication come to life on the runway. From the sketches, the architecture, draping and pattern making to the runway. I got to know my design from inside and out. I’d like to share something I read that fit perfectly. “To be a great fashion designer, you must first be a great artist. Imagination is where fashion begins and to have the ability to see beauty before you can even cut the fabric is magical. From all your sketches, all the curves you find yourself mastering, and to every shade you draw is the foundation of your designs. Your art sharpens your creativity. It trains your eyes for the details and gives life to your vision. “- unknown. I had front row seats for this successful accomplishment. I graduated with an Associate of Art degree in Fashion Design March 2004 at age 21.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It took me exactly 20 years to get back on track. After I graduated in 2004 with my associate’s degree of Art in Fashion Design, I stuck around LA for another year, but everything started going downhill fast and my only other option was to move back to Texas in 2005 where I grew up in. Everything wasn’t as when I left then I met my husband in 2006 and decided to buy a one-way ticket to Toledo Ohio to spend my life with him here. We’ve been together since and we now have three children together, Ronnie Ray, Victoria Love and Sofia Estella. I kept sewing for family and friends to help me get more experience in the sewing industry. I was working a day job then later decided to go back to school to take more college courses. I received my diploma in Billing and associate in medical office administration. I worked as a biller and continued to do sewing alterations on the side for family and friends. In 2024 when I was in between biller jobs the idea of becoming a Seamstress Artist came to mind. I needed a logo, so I started searching for ideas and this took me a while to come up with and or find the perfect logo to represent me. Once found, I created a Facebook page and a Google account. I named it Sewing Love by Gloria. I started to receive phone calls, text messages, Facebook private messages and emails from clients with sewing needs. I then realized that there are so many people out here with sewing needs and my timing was perfect. I started sewing for the public right after my Sewing Love by Gloria Facebook and Google account were created. My calendar started to fill up with client seamstress consultations. My little side sewing business was being seen by all who needed a seamstress. I sew with passion, love and seamstress magic. I make sure my clients are happy. My family, friends and clients started to refer to me by word of mouth as well. As I was done with one alteration, another one was already in line. That is when I felt I was sewing with a purpose instead of just for fun and that is a pretty cool feeling.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Seamstress Artist with an Associates of Art Degree in Fashion Design in the Toledo Ohio area with 20 plus years of sewing experience. What sets me apart from others is my passion for sewing. I sew with love and seamstress magic. I help clients feel welcome when they meet me and give them great experience. I create and give free Sewing Love by Gloria hair Scrunchies to every client that has extra fabric left over from their items. This is sweet and it is extra special for the brides-to-be to have a piece of their wedding gown aside from their actual wedding gown. I do alterations and I have consultations scheduled on weekdays in the evenings and anytime on weekends. I am honored to have helped each and every one of my clients. I have had the pleasure of, and I am most proud of creating custom sentimental value pieces that are breath-taking. For example, I previously created a custom quincenera dress for a Hello Kitty doll that matched the quinceneras’ dress that was themed Beauty and the Beast. Another example is when I receive a call from the bride-to-be mother asking if I could create a cathedral veil for her daughter using the same embellishment lace trim off her bridal gown that had been preserved for 30 years. Of course, I said yes and it was my honor. This took me some time, but it was all worth it. I removed the embellishment lace trim off of the bottom of the mother’s bridal gown and after creating the cathedral veil out of tulle fabric, I added the embellishment lace trim all around the cathedral veil by hand using a transparent thread. Another very important request was when I was contacted to sew in a ranking to a Military Jacket that needed done day of for his Military Ball. I gladly said yes, it was my honor. If you are looking to learn how to sew small projects as a group, I have small sewing workshops at Whiskey Bean Boutique. If you or anyone you know has interest in learning how to sew, please refer them to me. Starting January 2026, I will be scheduling one on one sewing lessons in my home sewing studio. I am proud of myself for making Sewing Love by Gloria happen. I am truly grateful to all my clients who have contacted me, who trust me with their items, who have chosen me for their sewing needs, who keep me in mind for future alterations and who refer me to everyone they know. I am grateful for the Whiskey Bean Boutique who gave me the chance to have my first Sewing Love by Gloria toddler line of dresses in stock for purchase. I am also grateful to have had the opportunity to volunteer as fashion designer’s assistant at Flaunt Fashion Show 2025 that is hosted by Equality Toledo yearly. Please stay tuned for Flaunt Fashion Show 2026 because I have asked and I may possibly be included as one of the featured local Fashion Designers. I don’t just sew fabrics, I sew stories. Very few will get to understand the patience that it takes to stitch a garment together. A piece of my soul is left in each design. Each design piece that I bring to life with my own hands is stitched with love and seamstress magic that you cannot find in any factory or store. I am a seamstress artist that loses track of time staying up late sewing when everyone sleeps. My love for sewing is magical. I am Sewing Love by Gloria.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I currently do my seamstress alterations and consultations from my home sewing studio. I will be booking one-on-one sewing lessons starting January 2026 that will also be held in my home sewing studio. I currently do not have a location outside of my home, but I am hoping for in the future.
