Today we’d like to introduce you to Scooter Allen.
Hi Scooter, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
When I was growing up I kind of just naturally gravitated toward the alternative music scene. I love the people, the aesthetic, and the energy. I started playing guitar when I was 13 or so and started playing in bands and writing our own music a few years later.
My first “real” band went to a bigger named recording studio and had the worst dumpster fire experience you could imagine. Looking back, with the experience that I have now, we did a lot of things wrong. We still should have walked away with songs, though. We never even ended up completing a single song, and the guy kept our money without speaking to us ever again. This experience kind of shaped who I am now, and really shaped a lot of my core values.
I decided at that point to try to learn myself. This took years and years, and I think there’s always more to learn, but that experience set it in motion.
Fast forward to the last band I was in, Atlas Uncharted. We wrote and released two records and a few singles. After playing a ton of shows and being in different recording studios I realized that my love for music is specifically more in the creation of music. I love writing, recording, and figuring out how to make things sound really cool.
I decided to pursue producing bands full-time and have been ever since.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s not really a road map for this sort of thing. I think the first year I made about $6000 total. The first studio I worked at flooded about two or three years in. It was irreparable and I had to find another location or I couldn’t make any money.
It’s weird being “creative” because we get out of the corporate world to do what we love but then dive right into having to learn how business works haha. It can be extremely anxiety-inducing because if anything goes wrong, there’s no one to blame other than yourself.
… or possibly the plumber.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an alternative music producer based out of Cleveland Ohio. I’ve worked with bands such as Dreamwalker, Dying Desolation, and Dark Island and have worked on projects with labels such as Artery Recordings.
As anyone who has worked with me can attest, I like to form a deeper relationship with my artists to bring out the best that they can truly be. While you’re working with me, you can consider me another band member with an unbiased vision for what is best for not just the song, but the artist’s brand entirely. I like to call this creating the “comic book superhero version” of the band.
Any big plans?
I’m very excited to watch the artists I work with grow and adapt to this new age of the music/entertainment industry.
I think TikTok has changed the way a lot of people discover music in the past few years and it’s sparked a larger need for digital content overall. As for me, I’d love to open a larger studio in the future to be able to help more and more bands crush their goals.
