Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Benedict.
Hi Rose, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In 2013, I began my professional life as a Marketing Coordinator, but wanted to delve more into the creative side of things. This led me to go back to school in 2015 to pursue a post-baccalaureate program of study in which I completed tons of Graphic Design courses (and my first Web Design course!). After that, I worked in-house as a Graphic Designer at Ohio State and Cardinal Health — but I really, really wanted to become a full-time freelancer. I was just so curious about it, and wanted to take the leap but didn’t quite know how. I began some freelance projects through my social network, and I tried out full-time freelancing for a year. I then realized that what I actually wanted was to become a small business owner, so that’s what I did! I began Rose Benedict Design in January 2022, and have loved it so much! It’s not for everyone, but is definitely right for me. Since then, I’ve worked with so many small business owners (therapists, photographers, artists, stylists, creatives, etc.) and it’s so fulfilling to be able to help their businesses grow!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My first year in business, 2022, was also the year I was planning my wedding reception. We had gotten married in 2020 but delayed the reception due to the pandemic. Those were two financial hurdles by themselves, but together, they made for a scary year in which I really pulled back on spending to be able to better support my goals. It was worth it, but I was constantly second-guessing in 2022, and wondering whether I should have saved up more money for this bumpy year! I knew that I was “all-in” on my business though; and once the financial hurdle of the wedding reception passed, I began focusing more on growing my business and seeing it thrive!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Brand and Showit Website Designer for creatives and service providers such as photographers, therapists, artists, wellness professionals, stylists, psychologists, etc. My niche really developed because my style is distinctive; I tend to describe it as “earthy yet sophisticated”. This is great for brands who want to communicate a calm, grounded presence, yet still feel high-end and special. I also specialize in adding sophisticated, hand-crafted illustrations to the brands and websites that I create, in order to add uniqueness and a personal touch. I’m most proud of my ability to create bespoke brands and websites for small business owners and help their businesses grow!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice would be to join networking groups in your area for small business owners, creatives, or whatever makes the most sense for your goals. When you find that you really click with a few people from that networking group, ask them if they’d be willing to spend some time together talking about the common joys and struggles of small business life. This is what I have done, and it resulted in monthly co-working dates in which some designer friends and I swap helpful knowledge, take a look at each other’s work, and provide accountability. I highly recommend seeing if you can develop a small group of peers like that!
