Today we’d like to introduce you to Roger Brackins.
Hi Roger, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hello! My name is Roger Gene Brackins. And I am a self-taught artist from Cleveland, OH. I began drawing at the age of 5. It wasn’t until 2018 that I tried my hand in painting. And I have loved it ever since. Since beginning my career as an artist, I have acquired amazing opportunities. For example, in December of 2019, I was first contracted by a company here in on Columbus by the name of Washington Prime Group to paint live at the Javits Center in Manhattan, NY at one of their events they were hosting. I have also been able to help complete a mural on the front of 934 Gallery here in Columbus as well back in June of 2020. I’ve since had numerous opportunities here locally and out of state. Things have truly been a blessing.
Now as a full-time artist, I have the chance to really expand my passions and abilities. And pursues something I truly enjoy!
I experienced the struggle of growing up in inner-city Cleveland. But Art became my escape and my passion. I attribute my artistic talents to my loving and supportive mother. Her constant drive, resilience, inspiration, guidance, wisdom, and determination paved the way for the artist that I am today. I truly consider art a life saver and can’t imagine my life without it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’d love to say life as an artist has been all smooth. But I wouldn’t be telling the trusts if I did.
Don’t get wrong though, I’ve met and have collaborated with some of the most amazing artist and people. Not to mention the amazing opportunities I’ve received thus far.
But there were some struggles I faced and still continue to til this day.
From money-hungry gallery owners, individuals who have devalued my work, to failed attempts at extortion.
It isn’t an easy road being an artist. There’s a lot of game out here. And you learn very quickly how to play your hand.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a visual artist. More specifically, I am a painter that specializes in mediums such as Abstract and Contemporary.
I often explore combinations of realism, abstract and contemporary art forms within my work. My portraits are meant to capture the essence and strength of black women and men. The disappearing features of which I use, call attention to the presence, absence, and visibility of black lives while creating a powerful and profound visual statement. I highlight the energy and potential of abstract compositions using a variety of application techniques.
I am most proud of being able to do something with my life that actually has the power to change and or inspire those around me.
I’m a firm believer in paying my experiences forward. You never know who might need to hear them. And I feel that if I am able to gain some sort of platform by pursuing my passions, then I’ve then reached my purpose in this life. To inspire.
I feel that I have a very unique story, authenticity, and ability. And this is what sets me apart from others.
What are your plans for the future?
At this point in my life/career, I just want to keep going. In every meaning.
I don’t want to stop what I’m doing. It truly makes me happy. And I feel that I not only owe it to myself to keep going but also those who have believed and supported me from the very beginning. I just want that platform to tell our stories.
