Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Herbert
Hi Natasha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I kind of stumbled into photography after being a web designer for some years, before I even realized it was going to be my thing. I’ve always been a visual storyteller at heart, but it really clicked when I was studying Digital Media at Michigan State. That’s where I got my foundation, but honestly, my real education came from just getting out there and shooting—capturing moments, figuring out light, and learning how to make people feel comfortable in front of the camera.
I started out in wedding photography, and over the years, my work has been featured in publications like Essence, Brides, Allure, Huffington Post, and Glamour Magazine. But I’ve never been one to stay in just one lane. I also create content for brands, do corporate media production, and recently started a YouTube channel where I geek out over photography gear.
One of the most rewarding things I’ve done is teaching photography to 4th graders through my program, The Avenue Cleveland. Seeing kids get excited about telling their own stories through a camera? That’s been pretty incredible.
Now, I’m expanding into more commercial work while still keeping my passion for storytelling at the center of everything I do. Whether it’s a wedding, a brand campaign, or a short-form comedy reel about photography struggles (because we all need a little humor), I just love creating. It’s been a wild, unexpected journey, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not—it’s been more of a winding, unpredictable road than a smooth highway. Early on, I found myself juggling both the creative side of photography and the not-so-glamorous business side, which often felt like trying to solve a puzzle with pieces that kept changing shape. There were plenty of nights where the excitement of capturing the perfect moment battled with the anxiety of investing in new gear or landing that elusive client and knowing my worth.
Every type of project brought its own set of challenges. For instance, wedding photography is amazing, but it also means coping with high expectations and unpredictable moments that don’t always go as planned. Then there’s balancing passion projects—like teaching photography to kids or diving into content creation—with the pressure of delivering top-notch work for brands and publications. Add in a few bouts of self-doubt along the way, and you get a pretty wild ride!
In the end, though, those bumps have been invaluable. They’ve taught me resilience, pushed me to evolve my craft, and ultimately made every win feel that much sweeter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I like to think of myself as a bit of a jack-of-all-trades in the visual storytelling world. At my core, I’m a photographer and content creator who specializes in capturing those authentic, unscripted moments—whether it’s on a wedding day, a brand campaign, or even during one of my more laid-back personal projects.
I’ve built my career on being able to put people at ease so that their true selves can shine through. It’s that genuine connection—beyond just snapping a pretty picture—that I believe sets my work apart. I’m known for creating images that feel both raw and real, and for blending technical skill with a heartfelt approach to storytelling.
Beyond the camera, I also dive into the world of education with programs like The Avenue Cleveland, where I get to share my passion for photography with middle school aged children. It’s incredibly rewarding to see how art can empower someone at such a young age, and it definitely keeps me grounded and inspired.
Overall, I’m most proud of being able to merge creativity with community. Whether I’m working on a high-profile brand shoot or teaching a kid how to capture a moment, every project is an opportunity to tell a story that resonates. That blend of commercial savvy, artistic authenticity, and genuine human connection is what I think truly sets my work apart.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
One thing that might surprise people is that, besides my work in photography and storytelling, I’ve got a pretty unexpected athletic background. I was born in Hawaii and grew up playing pretty much every sport you can imagine. I wasn’t just casually involved—I was a state champion and even played women’s tackle football. That competitive spirit and my experience on the field taught me a ton about discipline, teamwork, and resilience, all of which really influence my creative process today. It’s a fun twist that shows there’s more to my story than just the camera lens!
