Conversations with Mercury Moon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mercury Moon.

Hi Mercury, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story starts off as many other artists stories do, I guess. Being infatuated and mesmerized by the arts at a very young age. I was born and raised in Erie, PA. I spent most of my summers in between home and the south (Atlanta, GA/Laurel, MS). Growing up, I was a creative kid. When my siblings and I would be bored around the house, I would come up with silly games to play. When we weren’t having fun, I’d be off to myself soaking up all the music I could. Listening to the radio, playing CDs, and watching music videos. I wouldn’t say I was a shy kid, but I was reserved. No one had any idea the passion and love I had for music. One day, my cousin who was into rapping asked me to rap a verse on his song. I was extremely terrified! I told him no countless times. Eventually, I wrote my verse and recorded it. Not my best work lol. The bug had bit me at this point. Nothing came of it till years later though. I was in school at a community college. I was only there for a semester, because instead of going to my classes, I would stay in my townhouse writing and recording songs. The only classes I would attend were my English and creative writing classes (duh! Haha). In hopes that these classes would hone and perfect my skills in the craft. Through years after, I would connect and collaborate with other talented artists, who would push me to be the best I thought I could be. Since then I’ve performed at countless shows, facilitated a dream collaboration, and released plenty of projects. Did I mention last year I changed my moniker?

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. Growing up, the family from time to time had financial issues. I’ve slept from couch to couch at one point in my life. I even slept in my car for a few nights. Thank goodness it was summertime lol. Also, finding ways to fund my passion has been a constant thorn in my side.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in songwriting. My friends often refer to me as “the hook man”. I embrace the title. Although, sometimes I look at them like, “Y’all do know I have bars right lol?” I think my willingness to remain a student and have genuine love and respect for the art sets me apart from others.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Being authentic and genuine as possible. I’m not trying to be someone else. I’m just trying to be the absolute best version of me.

I’m very proud of my grandson that he continued his passion, because he did display a love of music. But the family always worried should he chase his dream because he definitely faced challenges but his drive kept him focused. You know I worried about him being able to financially take care of himself and he did, but he never gave up on his dream. I hope one day he’ll be able to sustain himself completely from his passion of music.
