Conversations with Matthew DeRubertis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew DeRubertis.

Hi Matthew, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I created Delion at a time when I was drinking too much coffee and not feeling well from all the caffeine. I started playing around with different recipes for coffee alternatives, as I was not very happy with various products on the market.

When I settled on the unique recipe for what later became Delion, I drank it exclusively while taking a long break from coffee. Friends tried it, and began asking me to make them batches. They encouraged me to try vending at some markets. I got my start at Hudson Farmer’s market, which ended up being a big success. Pretty soon, I was selling product as fast as I could make it!

I began producing in a commercial kitchen in Akron and solidifying the brand. After being featured on Fox 8 Good Day Cleveland this January, Delion has become well known as a healthy coffee alternative in northeast Ohio. I do most of my business online through my website (www.delion.coffee) and have a national customer base as well.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t know if building a business is a really smooth road for anyone! I have never worked in a product based business before (the rest of my career has been in arts, education, and services) so this venture has been a big learning for me. Navigating a totally new industry has been the biggest challenge. My next challenge will be learning to scale up production for broader distribution.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before creating Delion, I had a career as a musician/bassist and yoga teacher. I loved my bass playing career and enjoyed many years playing in awesome bands with great artists. Covid era changed everything, and I took it as an opportunity to expand my personal music project known as SEER MUSIC. I make ambient music inspired by nature and journeys in consciousness.

In 2021, I built out a camper van with a music studio in it and began traveling thru the southwestern deserts, composing and recording along the way. I love to create music in beautiful nature settings as I travel. My live performances are immersive experiences that incorporate music, relaxation, and meditation.

I am also a very passionate rock climber, and began working as a climbing guide in the New River Gorge in 2022. I love sharing the craft and experience of climbing rocks!

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Hard to say! In this moment, the first thing that came to mind was being about 10 years old, raking leaves on a crisp October day with sun and patchy clouds and feeling really at peace.
