Conversations with Łukasz Leja

Today we’d like to introduce you to Łukasz Leja.

Hi Łukasz, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a fine art painter and also work in architecture. My journey began with an architectural degree, which first brought me to New York, where I practiced professionally. Over time, I felt a growing need for a more personal and expressive outlet, which led me to painting. Today, I balance both worlds—I run my own architectural practice while continuing to paint, with each practice fueling and inspiring the other.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but I’ve honestly found the challenges to be exciting. Balancing two careers and learning how to live in a way that supports both has been a constant puzzle. Starting my own business without outside help was another big challenge. But each obstacle pushed me to grow, to adapt, and to discover new ways of working and living. In the end, these struggles have been exactly what I wanted from life—they’ve taught me a lot and shaped me into who I am today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an architect who designs spaces from start to finish—whether institutional, commercial, or residential. My approach is very collaborative, working closely with clients to develop floor plans, visualizations, and a clear vision of their project. Alongside architecture, I maintain a fine art practice. My paintings often draw on architectural structures as a starting point, which I then merge with human figures. Through this, I aim to make queer life and stories more visible, unapologetic, and celebrated.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happiest is connection—being close to my friends and building meaningful relationships. Living a life surrounded by art and love is deeply fulfilling to me. I also find joy in creating work that is both expressive and political, using art as a way to connect with others and share ideas that matter.
