Today we’d like to introduce you to Lillian McGinnis
Hi Lillian, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We have always wanted to start a coffee shop. My mom was diagnosed with stage 3 Ovarian Cancer in March of 2022. This made us realize that life is too short and we just decided to take the leap of our dreams. While my mom was going through the treatments to save her life we had time to business plan and set everything into place. In May 2023, we opened Broken Leaf Cafe in the heart of our little town. Our goal was to create a safe space where everyone of all ages felt comfortable to hangout and enjoy great coffee and food. I personally have struggled with anxiety and depression and I have dreamed of having a place that makes peoples days better. We write positive and motivational quotes on every single one of our cups to spread love to the people who walk through our door. I feel like we have made a positive impact in our community. We strive to continue to grow and create change for our town and surrounding areas. We have a focus on customer service and high quality products. Our coffee is locally sourced and certified organic. Every order is made to order with love and care.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
We started out really busy and quickly obtained a good customer base. We have had a slow couple months that we have pushed through. We started our business in a small space that was already in a local building, so we have had a lot of confusion on the way that our business is set up currently. We hope that in the future we can create the space that we want and it wont be as confusing to our new customers. Our ‘regulars’ continue to grow rapidly and we are so thankful for each and every one of them! There is always struggle in growth and we will continue to push through any obstacles that come our way.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I was a full time college student studying Animation Game Design. I spent 6 years in college but it never really felt like my path. While my mother was going through cancer treatment I took the semester off. I have always wanted to do something creative in life and to help others. I have over 7 years of experience in the food service industry. I was talking with my mom and decided to take a leap of faith into this new business adventure. This feels like it is what I should be doing and has given me the greatest sense of accomplishment.
How do you think about luck?
I don’t believe in luck. I feel that you make your own destiny. Life is how you react to situations and how you overcome obstacles. It takes hard work and dedication to get to where you want in life. If you are trying then you are already half way there. I believe that everything happens for a reason. Sometimes bad things happen so that life can push you in a new direction.
