Conversations with Larry Thomas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Larry Thomas.

Hi Larry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story. 
I am a 19-year-old motivational speaker, content creator, podcast host, and owner. Larrythomasmotivates is the name of the podcast, which can be found on Spotify and YouTube. I am from Youngstown, Ohio, born and raised. When I was 14-15, I moved to Columbus, Ohio. Throughout my childhood, I faced neglect and poverty and found myself in the midst of crimes happening all around me. I always knew that I would be something, but didn’t know what. While living in Youngstown, I attended Chaney High School in their Visual Performing Arts Program. That is where I learned how to act and publicly speak in front of others. I participated on the East High School Football Team on the east side of Youngstown, Ohio. That is when I found my love for the game of football. Starting off, I wasn’t really good, but I found myself gaining more talent as I got older. I moved to Columbus, Ohio, due to some household issues, and my mom wanted better opportunities for me and my siblings. When I moved to Columbus, I then moved to Canal Winchester, Ohio, and attended school there. I participated on the football, wrestling, and also the track team throughout all of high school. After high school, I attended Ashland University as a preferred walk-on. As a freshman, I was able to achieve a dream everyone has as a college athlete of winning a conference championship my freshman year. Although I didn’t stay at Ashland long due to unforeseen reasons, I made history. I began doing public speaking before and while in college, such as creating a documentary about my life, speaking at funerals, hosting conferences to fix the poverty and crime rates in Franklin County, working with public officials to find solutions to crimes and get laws passed. The whole reason I started motivational speaking is to shine a light on all that I have went through and to let others know that have faced similar circumstances that they are not alone, and they can make it through hardships and roadblocks as well. 

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. Some of my struggles I faced were neglect, poverty, being around criminal activity within the city I lived in, not knowing what I wanted to do with my life. 

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am upcoming national motivational speaker for the Midwest region. I previously have spoken at Funeral’s, conferences, news channels, public events, etc. I am most proud of the portfolio I have built for myself at such a young age. What sets me apart from others is that I’m authentic and I use my platforms to help others that face hard times and adversity. I use my voice for a voice that others may not have. 

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
If you are someone that is just starting out always be open to corrective criticism, make connections, don’t be afraid to be different, be yourself at all times. I wish I would have known how to edit and publish my own videos at an earlier time than now, how to speak in front of crowds, how to make money off my streams and views.
