Conversations with Khadijah Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to Khadijah Scott.

Hi Khadijah, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started HighND officially in 2020 but I have been making wigs since end of 2018. Originally it was just a way for me to eliminate my monthly hair expense but still look good but very quickly women became infatuated with how natural my wigs were. At first I started hand sewing wigs which would take me days because I was still working a full time job and full time mom at the time but shortly after I booked an online wig making class and learned how to make them using the sewing machine. I never used a sewing machine in my life until that very moment & one thing I learned quickly was I needed to learn how to actually use the machine before I could even make the wigs. I remember crying behind the machine at my dining room table because I felt I would never get it. God had other plans.

As my business grew I began to connect with many women who not only wanted to look good and protect their natural hair but experienced health issues which caused their hair to fall out & my wigs became their confidence boost & that’s when I knew I found my calling. To have a woman come sit in my chair and cry or even feel embarrassed by their natural hair and by the time their appointment is over you can see the confidence boost the mood change and that right there means everything to me. My business stands for quality and convenience. During that time I taught classes both in person and virtual the very same skill that allowed me to walk away from my 9-5 and pour into other women but in 2021 I got pregnant with my son & things took a drastic turn. I suffered from some skin issues which made my confidence shift dramatically on top of the weight gain from pregnancy, post partum etc. I just couldn’t show up for my business in the way I would have liked to. So I took a step back went back to corporate to get back to the drawing board. I became extremely unhappy with my 9-5 and decided to go back all in with my wigs literally just took a leap of faith and that’s how we are here today still standing stronger than ever.

My children my HighND girls my faith in God is what keeps me going. I see the vision so clearly I can not give up until its fulfilled & even then I could never leave my community I have built. My journey has not been easy what so ever as a single mom of 2 every day is trying but the journey continues & I am so grateful for God continuing to carry me & excited to see what’s next. The story is still being written.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. I didn’t know how to use a sewing machine at first so I had to conquer that, My first few wigs were so lumpy and bumpy so I had to figure that out. Running a business in itself is not a walk in the park there’s so many pieces to the puzzle that I didn’t have an understanding on that I still am teaching myself. You can never stop learning never stop growing. On top of the many hats I wear as a solo entrepreneur Im also a single mom so trying to incorporate my children and their schedules and attending to them is not easy. I still struggle with work life balance but the reward of being present for my kids while still running the business is worth it all.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in creating custom glueless wigs that are tailored to my clients head size/ measurements. They come ready to wear right out the packaging. The thing that sets me apart from most is that my wigs are designed to look as natural as humanly possible. We love the ” That can not be a wig…” allegations. I love when women can’t believe my wigs are glueless so ill lift my wig right in front of them so they can see the quality and the attention to detail for themselves.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
What makes me happy is my ability to get up every day and create the life I want to live for me and my children off a skill I essentially taught myself years ago. We are not where I would like us to be but every day we are one step closer. I also love that my HighND girls always choose me despite all the other options in the world. they trust that my work is going to be delivered with quality in mind every time and I am so grateful.
