Today we’d like to introduce you to Keyla Haynes.
Hi Keyla, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a passion for doing hair since I was a child. In high school, I got accepted into the career center for the cosmetology program. I wasn’t able to attend the program due to my family moving to Columbus and their program was full. After graduating high school, I went out into the corporate world working in different industries. In all the different jobs I’ve had I was never happy because I wasn’t doing what I was passionate about.
My natural hair journey began in 2010, as a natural myself I’ve had my share of trial and error and struggled to understand how to care for my natural hair. I enrolled in New Directions Beauty Institute school to become a licensed Natural Hair Stylist. Naturally Chic was established to provide education, techniques, and resources to help them embrace, inspire and feel chic when rocking their tresses.
After being in the industry with my natural hair license, I realized that there weren’t many continuing education classes that focused on education regarding natural hair care unless it was to straighten the hair. My natural hair license had me very limited on what I could do in the industry.
When I enrolled in The Paul Mitchell School of Columbus to get my cosmetology license. Once I graduated, I became a suite owner while building clientele amid of covid hitting and having to adjust to working during the pandemic. I later moved into a bigger salon space, launched my product line Naturally Rooted Strands, and became a Certified Trichologist.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t been a smooth road for me. I’ve faced many challenges throughout my career. I always stayed prayed up and let God navigate me through any challenges. I’m always learning, investing, and believing that I can be a better version of myself than I was yesterday.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Curl Specialist who serves those with tight curls & coils who prefer to wear their hair in its natural state. I specialize in curly cuts, color, and natural hair styling. I help simplify your regimen and give you guidance and knowledge to take care of your hair without being overwhelmed & spending hours on wash day. I’ll customize a hair care regimen based on your individual hair care needs. With also having a background as a Certified Trichologist I’m able to deliver solutions for your hair or scalp needs by creating a plan of action to get to the root of the problem.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I am authentic and operate my business with integrity. I was very clear on my business plan and what direction I wanted my business to go. Any goal worth achieving won’t be easy to obtain, it will be scary, and at times fear will make you want to give up. If it gets hard, don’t give up, achieving that goal is so rewarding. I never stop learning; I always continue to improve my skills and craft.
