Conversations with Kennedy Moody

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Moody.

Hi Kennedy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
JoyMarie’s Kitchen came about after going through the pandemic. I had just graduated college in 2019, moved back home, and was working a 9-5 job in my field that wasn’t fulfilling me mentally. Owning a business was always a goal of mine and I thought there was no better time than the present to get one started that would help fill the void I had.

I started thinking about things that were not only fun but actually meant something to me that I wanted to share with the world. Baking was at the top of the list and more specifically making cheesecakes. Baking is a skill that my grandmother (Joyce Marie Moody) taught me at a young age.

It was the way we bonded and has always held a special place in my heart. My grandmother also ran her own baking business at one point creating desserts for only family friends, but never thought to scale it to a business outside of family friends. JoyMarie’s Kitchen is me continuing a legacy while creating another one to pass down to my future children/grandchildren. My grandmother has a sign in her kitchen that says “Joyce’s Kitchen.” That sign gave me the inspiration to name my business after her so I can always hold on to the memories, love, and experiences that we created together in her kitchen. It’s also my way of sharing our love and memories with the world.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting this business has been far from a smooth road. There’s been a lot of trials and tribulations that have made me even second guess if I’m evening doing the right thing, but the joy I feel while baking and when people enjoy my product is all the reinsurance I need to know I’m on the right path.

A lot of the struggles have come on the legal side of things. Having to learn the dos and don’ts of owning an LLC and being a licensed home bakery in Ohio. It was definitely a struggle in the beginning because I didn’t know where to even start to make JoyMarie’s a legal baking business. With the help of family and friends, I was able to get things together and I’m still learning a lot of things as I go.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
JoyMarie’s Kitchen is a home bakery based out of Toledo, OH. We specialize in cheesecake desserts, but we do a variety of other desserts including cakes, cupcakes, cookies, chocolate-covered treats, pies, etc. We are known for our amazing cheesecake jars! Peach cobbler, JoyMarie’s special, strawberry crunch, lemon crunch, and Oreo crumble are our top sellers.

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come with my baking. At first, I put myself into a box and now I like to try to create something new every month. The presentation, love, and passion that is shown through my products are what sets me apart from others, I give my all to every product that I put out.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
I am very big on podcasts and some of my favorites are Pour Minds, Know for sure, and A Million Dollars Worth of Game. These are my favorites because not only do they talk about relatable topics, but their platforms started from nothing and turned into something. It just shows that anything that you want in life can be obtainable.
