Conversations with Kelly Shasteen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelly Shasteen.

Kelly, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started my company in 2022 after the passing of my only sister. She was only 52 years old and passed from Cancer that was caused from environmental toxins. Through my grieving process I wanted something positive to come out of such a horrible loss. So I went on a mission to do something that kept my sisters memory alive and provide products that are nontoxic, perform at the highest level and smell absolutely amazing. This way, everyone can enjoy all the things we love without worrying about our health or the health of our pets. All of our cleaning products and laundry line are plant based, All of our fragrances are Phthalate, Paraben and cruelty free. I started selling to family and friends, then made a website. After the first year I opened a brick and mortar store. After one year of owning a store I was chosen out of over 100K applicants to compete on The Blox. It’s a reality tv show where startup businesses compete with one another while going through a business bootcamp. While I did not win, I made alot of connections including a Hollywood producer who is putting one of my candles in a scene of her tv series that will be out this spring! I’ll get to fly out for the premiere and be part of the red carpet. I’m excited to give out swag bags to 25 actors and actresses! After filming the Blox I realized that I could reach more potential sales by putting my products in multiple locations. So I closed my store and I’m now in 8 locations throughout three towns with more locations to come!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Owning and operating a business and being the only person is nonstop. There’s no 9-5, it’s 24/7. It is absolutely stressful and scary that you might make a bad decision. No one understands how difficult it is to wear all the hats as one person. I am the owner, operator, marketer, manufacturer, bookkeeper, salesperson and so on.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’ve always been creative and thought outside of the box. I’m most proud of after extensive research and learning, my products are safe, nontoxic and long lasting. My goal was to develop products that outlast and outperform all others. I want my sister to be smiling down knowing in my small way I’m doing my part to move towards people demanding better, safer products so no one goes through the horror of cancer caused by all the chemicals that are being allowed in store bought products.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I really tried to find a mentor. It seemed like no one had time just to chat, or was gate keeping information I was seeking. I’m so grateful I was chosen for the Blox because that business basic training bootcamp was worth more than money can buy. The connections I’ve made in so many wonderful mentors has been a lifesaver. I will gladly be a mentor without hesitation to anyone starting on their entrepreneurial journey.
